Abandoned baby found in Portales by jogger

PORTALES — A newborn boy is in good health after a woman said she found him abandoned at a park on Sunday morning while she was jogging.

Police say they have identified the mother and further investigation and charges are pending.

The jogger told police she heard the baby crying and later found him wrapped in a blanket and wearing shirts around 7 a.m. Sunday morning near the playground area of Rotary Park in the southeast part of town.

She then had residents of a nearby apartment complex call police. Police dispatched emergency medical service personnel who transported the child to Roosevelt General Hospital where the baby is now being cared for.

“The child is in good health, the cord had been tied off and the child seemed to have been warm still and in good health,” Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said.

Berry said the child, less than 24 hours old when it was found, was not born in a hospital.

Police said they could not release the names of the jogger or the mother until the investigation is complete.

The boy will be cared for by the Children, Youth and Families Department.

Children Youth and Families Communication Director Matt Dillman would not release specific information related to the child, but said the child is healthy and standard procedure is to place the child on a 72-hour hold to determine the course of action.

In a possible criminal case Dillman said Children, Youth and Families services would typically be guided by the police investigation and take into consideration any charges officers may file against the child’s parents.

“Our actions depend on what we find as far as the family goes,” Dillman said. “Family preservation is our No. 1 priority in any case. If not mom or dad, then maybe grandma or grandpa.”

If family preservation is too risky the child would be placed in foster care and put up for adoption, Dillman said.
