Elida wary of 3-1A rematch

The Elida Lady Tigers (6-0) control their destiny with four district matches remaining against Floyd, Fort Sumner, Dora and Vaughn.

The Fort Sumner Vixens still have a shot at the District 3-1A regular season title with a pivotal match at home on Tuesday against Elida.

“We would like to win the first game against Fort Sumner to set the tone,” Elida coach Darrell Chenault said. “But we still have a ways to go before we have to worry about them. “We still have to play Floyd.”

Fort Sumner is second in the district with a 5-1 record and travels to Dora to play the Lady Coyotes.

“Melrose could still be a factor in the district,” Fort Sumner coach Lisa McMath said about the district contenders. “They’ve got some big girls that block and hit the ball well.”

LADY RAM JV IS 1-5

The Portales junior varsity volleyball team is 11-5 with three games left.

The Lady Rams (11-5) host the Artesia Lady Bulldogs at 5 p.m. tonight.

“Our top outside hitters this year have been Patty Terry and Tana Prewitt,” Portales coach Kay Jilek said. “Our top setters have been Michelle Miller and Terry and Rachelle Self has been our top hitter in the middle. We’ve also had some good defensive play from Sarah Doerr.”

The Lady Rams have placed fourth in the Lubbock Monterey and Portales tournaments. Jilek said that they have a strong schedule against Roswell High, Goddard and Clovis because they have the same opponents as the varsity.

“It’s prepared them for next year when they’ll be on the varsity team,” Jilek said. “They know they have to step up their game for next year. Our weakness has been our defense. We still need to improve on our defense and our serving has been our strength. We didn’t miss a serve in two of the matches this year.”

PORTALES JV GAME CHANGED

The Tucumcari junior varsity team called to reschedule its game against the Portales Rams from today to 5 p.m. Saturday. The Rams will try to improve on their 2-4 record.

They have suffered losses to Ruidoso, Denver City, Clovis JV and Clovis sophomore teams.

“We real young,” Portales coach Chris Bachicha said. “Our quarterbacks haven’t played since junior high. We have Daniel Randa and Josh Gonzales playing at that position. Amador Lujan and Deonte Wyche have done a great job of running up the field. Wyche is quick.”

The Rams finish the year with a game at Lovington on Oct. 25.

“I want them (Portales JV) to improve as a team every week,” Bachicha said about the Rams’ final two games. “If we can keep them playing hard for four quarters we’re pretty satisfied.”

CONQUERORS HAVE TWO LEFT

The Faith Triumphant Conquerors football team heads into their final two weeks of play with two games at home against Holy Cross on Oct. 25 and Nov. 1. The Conquerors have a 4-3 record and will not have a playoff season.

“We definitely want to establish the run, but our passing game is our bread and butter,” Faith Triumphant coach Shawn Kelly said. “It’s kind of weird that we have to home games left against Holy Cross, but they don’t have a field so all of their games are on the road.”
