Mrs. Marguerite Elizabeth Yates Sass, 84, of Clovis, retired photographer/artist, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at her home.

She was born Sept. 9, 1918, in Shamrock, Texas, to J.E. and Margaret Yates.

She was known as “Butch” to family and friends. She spent her early childhood in Shamrock, Wellington and Amarillo, Texas, moving to Clovis in the early 1940s. She married A.A. “Al” Sass in 1946, in Roswell. They moved to New York City to study professional photography and returned to Clovis to open Sass Photography Studio in 1948. She was a member of Clovis Business and Professional Women, Clovis Toastmistress, St. James Episcopal Church Altar Guild, Dean Lucas American Legion Auxiliary 8 and 40 and Curry County Extension Service. Family members said she was an avid reader of classics and history, enjoyed oil painting, crafts, travel, camping, music and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a brother, Russell E. Yates.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, Eugene Sass (and wife, Barbara) of Staten Island, N.Y.; nieces, Jennifer Sass-McManimon of Plainsboro, N.J., and Abigail Sass of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a godson, James W. Sumner of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and goddaughters, Judith Kerr of Amarillo, the Rev. Robin Gantz of Pampa, Texas, Kala Davidson Scarafiotti of Nogal and Cindy Davidson Beverle of Baton Rouge, La.

Deacon Alan Brockmeier, the Rev. Gay S. Wellborn and the Rev. Robin Gantz will officiate the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the local Meals-on-Wheels or a favorite charity.
