SANTA ROSA 23, FORT SUMNER 16

SANTA ROSA — Sophomore Joaquin Salazar ran for 128 yards and scored a late touchdown that helped Santa Rosa hold off Fort Sumner 23-16.

The win snapped Fort Sumner’s 12-game winning streak. The Foxes had not lost since losing to Santa Rosa 23-21 early in the 2002 season.

Santa Rosa, a Class 2A team, is now 3-1. Fort Sumner, the defending state champion in Class 1A, also is 3-1.

Fort Sumner had more total yards and more first downs than the Lions, but the Foxes lost three fumbles. One of the fumbles, by halfback Ryan Fikany, killed a fourth quarter drive by the Foxes that had reached the Santa Rosa 28-yard line.

Santa Rosa stopped another Fort Sumner drive on downs at the Lions’ 38 in the final quarter.

Santa Rosa’s Mike Salazar scored on a 15-yard run on the third play of the game and threw a 51-yard scoring pass to Tomas Gonzales with 3:13 left in the first half.

Fort Sumner got a safety in the second quarter when the Foxes tackled Santa Rosa’s Kasey White in the end zone and trailed 15-2 at halftime.

The Foxes rallied in the second half on a 13-yard TD pass from Jameson West to Fikany and a 25-yard pass from West to Roel Canales with 7:57 left in the game.

Muleshoe (2-2) held the Chieftains (2-2) to 96 yards and forced four turnovers while ending a two-game losing streak to their Parmer County rivals.

Muleshoe’s first score came on a 35-yard pass from starting quarterback Landon Sheets to Campolla early in the first quarter.

Sheets was injured in the first half and did not return.
