United Daughters of the Confederacy

The Ellen W. Jones Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held their first meeting of the new year which was Founder’s Day with a Mexican Stack up luncheon was served in the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Ross in Clovis. Janelle Foster and Peg Kline served as co-hostess.

Decorations were fruit and peppers. Favors were clay posts of candy decorated with chili peppers.

The quote of the day was “True nobility comes of the gentle heart”. The president, Karen Allen, called the meeting to order with a welcome and thanked the hostesses.

Guests introduced were: Bill Nelson, G. C. Ross and John Hilliard from New York.

Jan Ross and Laura Nelson assisted the president in the Ritualistic Opening. Flora Witherspoon gave the Invocation before the meal.

The president conducted the business meeting. Jane Hilliard gave a report of the scholarship committee and passed out guidelines for scholarships, also application forms. Jan Ross, secretary read the minutes. In the absence of the treasurer, Joyce Locke, the president gave her report and also read the correspondence.

Janelle Foster reported a marker dedication will be held in Lovington and Monument in October. David Minton will be in charge of the program.

Pictures were shown of the marker dedication in Roswell in April.

The president announced a farewell luncheon was held in July for member Illa Huff, who has moved to Oregon. A lifetime membership certificate was presented to her.

Jane Hillard told and passed information on member, Betty Chavez (Mrs. Tibo) of Belen. She was honored by the Dona Eufinch award being presented April first in Belen. This was given by the New Mexico Hispanic culture Preservation League.

The award was for her part in preserving Spanish Culture. Mrs. Chavez was also honored to receive the 1998 Citizen of the Year Award.

John Hilliard read a paper on the burial of a Confederate soldier, Private Issac Mason from Giles County, Tenn. He served at the battle of Shiloh during the War Between the States. He was buried in a iron coffin with his boots on.

Karen Allen introduced Bess Jones who gave a very informative program on “The Winnie Davis Story”.

Mrs. Davis was well known at “Daughter of the Confederacy”. Mrs. Jones told of the lives of the Davis families and had many pictures and books to display. Karen Allen and Margaret Smith will be hostesses for the October meeting.
