Conquerors cruise to first win

School was in session for Faith Triumphant on Saturday, as its veteran team taught Six-Man Football 101 to Evangel Christian Academy.

The host Conquerors were never challenged against a team playing its first six-man game, as sophomore Luis McCain accounted for 198 yards of offense and five touchdowns in a 62-6 rout of the visiting Eagles at Conqueror Field.

Faith Triumphant (1-1) put the game away early, scoring on three of their first five offensive plays. J.J. Johnson scored on a 44-yard double reverse to start the blowout, which ended at halftime via the 45-point mercy rule.

The Eagles played the part of a team new to the sport, as they managed 42 yards of offense — a figure that was buoyed by Jordan Spence’s 65-yard touchdown reception early in the second quarter.

The reception accounted for one of two first downs for the Eagles— the other on a Faith Triumphant pass interference penalty with seconds remaining in the contest.

“We played guys their first time that didn’t do some things as well as they did,” Conquerors coach Shawn Kelly said. “We have been there and we know exactly what that’s like.”

Evangel coach Nick Salazar said the Eagles will need to fix a few things in pass protection and on defense.

“I think the speed of the game is a little bit faster for them,” Salazar said. “I think the (plays) offensively were pretty much there. The pass protection needs a lot of work.

“I think our schemes were good, it’s just execution.”

McCain led the charge for Faith Triumphant, with touchdown throws of 27, 50 and 39 yards. He also ran for scoring runs of 26 and 40 yards. Johnson scored three touchdowns for the Conquerors, while Caleb Richards had two and Seth Pearson one.

Spence led the Eagles with 70 yards on two catches and four yards rushing.
