Zia soccer comes up short in opener

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Eastern New Mexico University played competitively but came up short in its first regular-season venture into women’s soccer on Saturday, losing to Hobbs-based College of the Southwest 3-2 in a three-team round-robin hosted by Adams State College.

Freshman forward Megan Dozier scored ENMU’s first goal about 26 minutes into the game on an assist from freshman midfielder Stacia Givens, pulling the Zias into a 1-1 tie. ENMU trailed 2-1 at halftime.

Kayla McKamey added the Zias’ final goal about midway through the second half.

ENMU faces Adams State at 1 p.m. today to complete the round-robin. Adams State defeated CSW 4-0 in Friday’s opening match.

Zia volleyball

The ENMU volleyball team lost to Grand Valley State (Mich.) 30-20, 30-18, 30-20 and to Regis (Colo.) 30-24, 30-24, 26-30, 30-21 on Saturday and finished 1-3 in the two-day Lady Buff Classic, hosted by West Texas A&M.

Sabrina Bird had 12 kills and Nicole Bayle added 10 in Grand Valley State’s win over the Zias, who were led by Kelley McGinty’s seven kills. The Zias had one more attack error (22) than kills (21) in that match.

Junior Anna Bellum collected 12 kills and 16 digs against Regis, which got 18 kills from Sarah Jackson and 13 kills and 22 digs from Holly Yamada.

ENMU lost its first match on Friday to Adams State 26-30, 30-23, 30-28, 30-23 before squeaking out a 30-23, 27-30, 30-24, 28-30, 16-14 over Texas Lutheran.

McGinty had 18 kills and 15 digs and Bellum added 15 kills against Texas Lutheran, while Jennifer Bullock collected 47 assists. In the loss to Adams State, McGinty posted 13 kills and nine digs, Bellum had 12 kills and 18 digs and Bullock finished with 37 assists.
