Growers and anyone interested in peanuts will get a chance to look at some promising varieties and the latest cultivation technology Tuesday when New Mexico State University’s Clovis Agricultural Science Center holds its annual Peanut Field Day.
There will be two tours, one at the center’s South Research Facility five miles south of Clovis on County Road 4, and a second in Portales at Eastern New Mexico University’s farm on South Floyd Highway, said Naveen Puppala, a college assistant professor of agronomy at the center.
The Clovis tour, which begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Agricultural Science Center, will concentrate on breeding, drip irrigation, the best crop rotation practices and technologies related to plant fertility, Pupala said.
The Portales tour, which begins at 11 a.m. at ENMU’s farm, will cover plant diseases and pesticides, including the most economical ways to control some diseases and the advantages of calcium fertilizer.
Speakers are: Puppala; Carol Sutherland, an entomologist with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture; Calvin Trostle, extension agronomist with the Texas A&M Research Center, Lubbock; Darrell Baker, retired extension agronomist, NMSU; Mark Burow, breeder, Texas A&M Research Center, Lubbock; Cho Young, biologist, ENMU; Floyd McAlister, director of county program Roosevelt County Extension Office, Portales.
