Mrs. Maria E. Tarango, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
She was born Dec. 28, 1924, Chanate, Texas, to Faustina and Cruz Esqueda.
She had been a resident of Portales since 1955. She married Jose Tarango on May 14, 1958. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Pasquala Esqueda; and by her husband, who died Feb. 29, 2000.
Survivors include four sons, Jesse Tarango of Andrews, Texas, Jose Manuel Tarango Jr. of Moses Lake, Wash., Raymond Tarango of Las Vegas, N.M., and Cruz Tarango of Portales; six daughters, Socorro Franco of Andrews, Melinda Tarango of Fort Worth, Texas, and Virginia Gallegos, Nicky Mondragon, Juanita Tarango and Tina Bacerra, all of Portales; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Severa Alvarado of Indio, Calif.
Father Tobin Hitt officiated the services.
Burial was in Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jesse Tarango, Jose Manuel Tarango Jr., Raymond Tarango, Cruz Tarango, Manuel Antonio Tarango, Manuel Franco, Joey Montoya, Vincent Montoya, Jesse Tarango Jr., Lydia Mounce, Juanito Garza and Rachel Gallegos.
Wheeler Mortuary of Portales is handling arrangements. Services have been held.
