Service organization raises money by serving

Local luminaries earned $1,341 for The Shelter For Victims of Domestic Violence Inc. last week in the second annual “Eat to Defeat Domestic Violence.”

From 6 to 8 p.m. May 20, a number of well-known locals waited tables at Poor Boy’s Steak House on North Prince, then donated their tips to The Shelter.

Tracy Harris, a board vice president for The Shelter, said Poor Boy’s owner Margaret Hutchison and her daughter, Diane Cole, have donated $159 to bring the total to $1,500.

Harris said the celebrity waiters were Dan Aguilar of the Clovis Police Department; Pam Atherton and Roonie and Moon of KSMX radio; Hank Baskett, director of The Oasis children’s center; Juan Garza, city commissioner and owner of Juanito’s restaurant; Curry County Sheriff Roger Hatcher; Ernie Kos, director of the Clovis-Curry County Chamber of Commerce; Clovis Mayor David Lansford, Grant McGee of KTQM radio; Clovis City Manager Ray Mondragon; Twyla Rutter of the Curry County Extension Office; John Snowberger, owner of the High Plains McDonald’s franchise; Tim Sours, president of Wells Fargo Bank; Ray Sullivan, publisher of the News Journal; and Len Vohs of KICA radio.

Harris said the participants had a range of experience in the fine art of waiting.

“Some of them had waited on tables before, some hadn’t. But they all did a great job,” she said.
