Chavez tied for 20th

ALBUQUERQUE — Guillermo Chavez of Clovis shot a 40-34 — 74, 2 over par, in the first round of the American Junior Golf Association’s Southwestern Classic Wednesday at Isleta Golf Course.

Chavez, who will be a junior in the fall at CHS, is currently in an eight-way tie for 20th place in a field of 79 players. The 54-hole tournament concludes with rounds today and Friday.

Defending champion Derek Tolan of Highlands Park, Colo., leads the tournament after shooting a 4-under 68.
