Lady Cats set for doubleheader

The Clovis High softball team, with most of its main ingredients still underclassmen, may have much to look forward to next year.

And, with prom night scheduled for Saturday, that day is sure to be filled with anticipation as well for team members.

So, putting all expectations aside will be the goal for coach Larry Trower as the Lady Wildcats play their last games of the year at Hobbs this weekend in District 4-5A competition. The teams will play a 4 p.m. Friday doubleheader and an 8 a.m. Saturday morning single game.

Clovis (9-14, 3-6 district) was eliminated from playoff contention last week while dropping two of three game at home to Eldorado.

“They’re kind of down about not getting to go to state and it’s always tough when you’re in this situation,” Trower said. “But I think they’ve been doing good in practice and I think they’re ready to play this weekend.”

Trower has kept his varsity roster intentionally light on reserves all year, generally with only three substitutes available. With the junior varsity also playing three games against Hobbs this weekend, Trower doesn’t anticipate any major changes.

The games will be the last in a Clovis uniform for seniors Kaycee Cornelison, Marina McGhee and Jamie Anaya.

Clovis has already played its rival to the south once this year, beating Hobbs 8-5 in the championship of the Clovis Invitational in early March.

“We played Hobbs earlier in the year and I’m sure they’ve improved, just like we have,” Trower said. “It’s going to be tough down there too, because it’s their home field and you have this big deal going on between Hobbs and Clovis.”
