Uley “Pappy” Dowell, 79, of Lake Sumner, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, in an automobile accident at Lake Sumner State Park.
He was born April 11, 1924, in Eldon, Iowa, to Uley Dewite Dowell Sr. and the former Grace Howard.
He served more than 22 years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was honorably discharged with the rank of chief petty officer. He was a longtime member and post commander of American Legion Post 29 at Lake Sumner, a member of the National Bass Club, North American Fishing Association, Good Sam’s Club, National Rifle Association, the Eagles Club in Roswell and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles at Fort Sumner.
He was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Georgia Jones; a brother, Irish Dowell; and a sister, Goldie Chapman.
Survivors include a son, Marvin Dowell of McAlester, Okla.; and two grandsons, Christopher T. Dowell of Alameda, Calif., and Benjamin M. Dowell of Maryland.
Cremation has taken place.
The Rev. Mitch Gray will officiate the services.
A gathering of family and friends will follow at 5 p.m. at American Legion Post 29 at Lake Sumner.
Chavez Funeral Home of Fort Sumner is handling arrangements.
