  • Forecasters: Near-blizzard on the way

Editor [email protected]@cnjonline.com The exact amount of snowfall eastern New Mexico can expect this weekend remains a mystery. But Curry County Emergency Management Coordinator Dan Heerding is pretty sure about one thing: “We’re in for a doozy of a storm.” Heerding participated in a briefing with National Weather Service officials on Wednesday afternoon to gather the latest on the predicted “near-blizzard conditions,” Heerding said. “Right now they’re saying anywhere from 8 to 16 inches (of snow) startin...

  • Seeking Santa's identity

Local columnist I found out recently that it has been 39 years since anyone in eastern New Mexico has seen Santa Claus and Don Criss in the same room at the same time. I’m not going to inch my way out to the end of an ice-covered limb here and announce that Don Criss IS Santa Claus, but I’m suspicious. The evidence seems to be mounting. For instance, Don Criss has been with KENW-TV at ENMU for 41 years, where he’s the director of production services. Production services, people. Is there any bigger production than Christmas?...

  • Empty stocking fund profile — Dec. 24

A mother of three recently asked Clovis’ Salvation Army for assistance. She had to leave an abusive situation in the city where she grew up and came to Clovis with little more than clothes for her children. “She is receiving some help from her family, but they are poor and can only help so much,” said Salvation Army Lt. Kelly Berggren. The woman — Ms. U — and her family found assistance from the Empty Stocking Fund. They are among about two dozen families who have qualified to receive holiday help from the Empty Stocking...

  • Year in review: New James Bickley open to students

Staff writer [email protected] Two things come quickly to mind when remembering 2015 for Clovis Municipal Schools: allegations of bullying and James Bickley’s new digs. “The new James Bickley Elementary School, what a phenomenal place,” Superintendent Jody Balch said about the $16 million school that opened in August. “It’s like anything else — if something is nice, people take care of it. It may equate to when kids dress up for picture day; it seems to be a better day of school because they kind of dress the part.” Scho...
