  • Area to receive first dose of winter

CMI staff writer [email protected] The season’s first dose of winter weather is headed toward eastern New Mexico this evening. That means freezing temperatures and a chance of snow. Meteorologist Jason Frazier, who works at the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, said the system will likely begin late this evening and stick around until Sunday evening or early Monday. “As we get into daytime Friday, we’re looking at temperatures being upwards of 20 to 30 degrees colder than Thursday’s highs,” Frazier said. “We’re lo...

  • Portales plans to appeal NMAA redistricting

    Kevin Wilson

CMI staff writer [email protected] The New Mexico Activities Association on Wednesday released new classifications and district formats for nearly all of its sports, and gave member schools 72 hours to appeal the format that would apply to the next two seasons. Clovis school officials said they will accept the changes, but Portales is concerned about travel and likely to appeal. The realignment ( available here) creates six classes in most sports, eliminating Class B and creating Classes 1A through 6A. Clovis moves up to...

  • Remove perks that enable Police

Recently publicized allegations of assault by police officers, while supposedly looking for drugs, are much more than simple assault allegations. They are acts of aggressive penetration. If you or I did anything similar we would be rapists. link Kent McManigal Is bodily penetration becoming a weapon of choice in the stupid and evil war on politically incorrect drugs? Texas police began this tactic a few years ago with their road-side syringe assaults to steal blood from...

  • Portales should pursue return of tax dollars

Portales City Council this week decided to pursue recovery of $150,000 taxpayers gave Sunland Inc. prior to the peanut processor’s bankruptcy. It’s the responsible thing to do. And the effort should be an aggressive one. City Manager Doug Redmond said Sunland officials in May accepted the money — about a month after Sunland began bankruptcy proceedings. During negotiations, Redmond said he asked Sunland representatives, “Is another shoe going to drop?” He received no indication bankruptcy was being considered. “They sho...

  • Latest movie marathon mixed bag

Latest update on VHS video guy is that I have yet to be able to reach him, so to my one inquirer, I do not yet know if his collection includes the 1988 film “Justin Case.” link Alisa Boswell But on a DVD note, I enjoyed another movie marathon for the first time in awhile Friday night, watching three new releases: • “Grown Ups 2”: It wasn’t nearly as cute or funny as the first one. The best way I can describe it is as being blah. There was no cute and meaningful story line... Full story

  • Think of Thanksgiving as 'Thanks Living'

    Joan Clayton

Every day is a day to be thankful. Being thankful is a way of life. An attitude of gratitude brightens the countenance and cheers the heart. If we were to write down all of our many blessings, we would need reams of paper. One of my many blessings happened when a student brought me a flower the day before Thanksgiving. The card with the flower read: “Teacher, I’m thankful to be in your class.” That card reminded me of my “teachers.” I thought of three of my college professors. I wrote a Thanksgiving letter to each one, expr... Full story

  • Letter to editor: Obama’s re-election proof of leadership

The headline “Being smart not same as leading” on R.L. “Rube” Render’s letter in Wednesday’s paper is a truism. Being smart is an attribute some, but not all, leaders possess as exemplified by Billy Graham and Martin Luther King as havers and Adolph Hitler and Jim Jones as lackers. As for the military, obedience is the cornerstone of the chain of command and leadership as perceived by many service personnel. It is understandable why Render, a staunch Republican, will overlook the leadership demonstrated by President O...
