Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 23, 2023

MELROSE – At this rate, the upcoming 8-man football playoffs may look more like the Melrose Invitational. Ranked No. 1 in the classification, Melrose had outscored its opponents 456-90 entering Friday's 8-man District 3 showdown against rival and second-ranked Fort Sumner. It was just more of the same, though, as the Buffaloes opened a 30-0 lead midway through the opening stanza and rolled to a 50-0 victory. It was the seventh shutout of the season for the Buffs (9-1, 4-0 d...

  • Might be slowly turning into a water snob

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Oct 21, 2023

I think I may be slowly evolving into a water snob. No, this change has nothing to do with the tribulations of my community and its municipal water supply. Instead, the evolution arose from my aging refrigerator. My fridge has an icemaker; it just doesn’t work. I’ve replaced it once but it eventually stopped working again. I believe the problem is rooted in the hard water we have in these parts that deposits a crusty scale on plumbing, coffee makers and icemakers. I dec...

At the freshly revived Guadalajara Restaurant in Clovis, Mike Mendoza has been called "The King of the Kitchen." So says restaurant management leader John Rink. Mendoza returns the compliment by describing Rink and the restaurant's management team as "one of the best he's seen anywhere." Mendoza, grandson of Guadalajara's founder Librado Casillas, took some time Wednesday afternoon to talk about his life and the new Guadalajara Restaurant, just off the corner of North Prince a...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 21, 2023

Early on, Eastern New Mexico University's men have put themselves in the heart of the Lone Star Conference soccer race. Wednesday night, the Greyhounds had a chance to take a big step forward. Instead, they settled for a smaller step. ENMU played Dallas Baptist to a 2-2 standoff at Greyhound Stadium, keeping the Hounds (4-5-4, 2-1-2 LSC) third in the 10-team conference. the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 21, 2023

The Lady Cats (11-8, 1-1 district), who opened their 4-5A slate with a four-set victory at Carlsbad two nights earlier, jumped on Hobbs (8-11, 1-1) early in Thursday’s match and claimed the opening set. Games 2 and 3 were close for a while, but the Lady Eagles pulled away late in both before dominating the final set. “We need to do a better...

  • Cats, Rams set to play for district titles this week

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 21, 2023

SANTA FE – Things are playing out similarly to how they did last season for Clovis High’s football team. The Wildcats battled their way through a challenging pre-district slate last year, then won their first three contests in District 5-6A play to set up a duel for the district title in the regular-season finale at Los Lunas. That didn’t turn out so well – the Cats were beaten 54-0 by the Tigers. But after Friday’s 34-21 victory over Santa Fe Capital, Clovis (4-5, 3-0) now hosts fifth-ranked Los Lunas (7-2, 3-0) on Friday...
