  • Water service returned to Portales

    PNT Staff

A water main break on Wednesday night left multiple homes and businesses on the west side of Portales with little or no water for hours. “It was from about Avenue K to Industrial (street), from Taco Box on west,” said Portales Public Works Director John DeSha. DeSha said the break occurred across from the Holiday Inn Express off of U.S. 70. Most water customers had service restored late Wednesday or this morning. Holiday Inn Express and the Super 8 Motel were among businesses impacted. “At 7:30 p.m. we got calls from our c...

  • Offering teacher bonuses not viable solution

The trouble with education reform is finding that elusive mix of what works. It’s clear that parenting matters, good teaching matters and an effective principal matters. It’s also true that smart curriculum is necessary. Since being elected governor, Susana Martinez has directed much effort at improving the state’s public schools. Programs, though, do not always translate into effective policy, and ideas that sound good in sound bites don’t necessarily work in practice. Take what sounds like a great idea — offer teachers...

  • Compromise foundation of country

A few things established by Republicans would include our National Parks, trust busting by Theodore Roosevelt, the Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Air Act and the Interstate highway system by Dwight Eisenhower. Let’s fast forward to the present. Loosening and ending controls on the financial industry, supported by both parties, enabled the financial disaster we are still recovering from. The majority of conservatives today still oppose government intervention in the “free market” despite the evidence this ideol...

  • Flag still resonates today

You have seen the bright yellow flags sporting the coiled rattlesnake, with “Don’t tread on me” boldly emblazoned across the bottom. But have you ever really thought about the phrase, and what it means? It doesn’t say, “Don’t offend me.” It doesn’t say, “Don’t refuse to give me what I feel I am owed.” It says, “Don’t tread on me.” It warns against an act of physical aggressive violence; an initiation of force. The “Don’t tread on me” flag is properly referred to as the Gadsden flag, and was named after Col. Christopher Gads...

  • Because of Jesus we have love

    Joan Clayton

Imagine living in a world without love. I heard the story of a little boy who was asked to give some blood to save his sister's life. He said "Yes," with no hesitation. After the transfusion the doctor noticed tears in the little boy's eyes. He asked the boy why he was crying. He replied, "Will it happen right away? How many minutes before I die?" That is love! "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. Love is not rude, is not...

  • Airman enjoys laid-back feel of Portales

    PNT Staff

Editor’s note: This is the thirdmonthly series of profiles Portales transplants. PNT staff writer [email protected] Senior Airman Nate Lunders chose Portales over Clovis when he was first stationed at Cannon Air Force Base. “I like the mentality here. It’s a little more relaxed than Clovis. It’s real laid back,” said Lunders, who works for security forces on base. The 25-year old East Liverpool, Ohio, native has been a member of the U.S. Air Force for six years. Lu...

  • State biologist says prairie chicken population likely will rebound with summer rain

PNT senior writer [email protected] A lead biologist for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish said there is no cause for concern over a report released Tuesday that the lesser prairie chicken population dropped by 50 percent this year. Biologist Grant Beauprez said the decline is mostly tied to drought conditions and will likely rebound next year with the amount of rain in the area this summer. Native to New Mexico and four surrounding states, the lesser prairie...

  • Kinetic founder Kelsey Prince says group trying to give back to community

PNT senior writer [email protected] Kelsey Prince’s hopes to make her city better, especially the parks she grew up playing in, turned out to be more than a pipe dream. The 19-year-old Portales native said she was hanging with her friends at the city’s skate park, bouncing ideas off one another on ways they could improve the city while giving youth something to do. “We were talking about how the old Rotary Park used to be,” Prince said. “These are my streets, these are...

  • My turn — Repetition aside, "Riddick" movie worth viewing

    Alisa Boswell

I must confess that I was a little disappointed in the new Riddick movie, “Lost in the Darkness.” As always, the awesomeness that is Riddick was worth seeing. It was great to see him “kicking butt and taking names” and surviving as he always does. The problem is that the movie is close to being an exact replica of the first film, “Pitch Black.”link Alisa Boswell Once again, Riddick is stranded on a desert-like planet whose creatures are determined to kill him, along with any o... Full story

DeSha said workers were able to isolate the leak but the valve will need to be replaced. DeSha said the break occurred across from the Holiday Inn Express off... Full story

  • Revamped Dexter, Portales set for rematch

    Dave Wagner

CMI sports writer [email protected] When Dexter visited Greyhound Stadium last fall to face the Portales Rams, both teams were relatively young. This time, both have more experience and are playing like it as they prepare for today’s 7 p.m. rematch at Dexter. Portales (4-0) comes in ranked third in Class 2A after scoring 106 points in is past two victories. The Demons (3-1) are No. 4 in Class 2A and have posted three shutouts to date. “They’re probably one of the stronger 2A teams,” Rams coach Jaiime Ramirez said. “They’r...

  • Dora gets forfeit win

The Dora Coyotes have improved to 4-1 without having to step onto the field. Roy, which was scheduled to play at Dora on Saturday afternoon, had to forfeit out of the contest because injuries and a player ejection from a recent game leave the Longhorns with less than six players available for the 6-man contest. The Coyotes are slated to return to action on Oct. 5 with a 1:30 p.m. home game against Reserve....
