  • Military mama: Children are a matter of perspective

There is a hierarchy when it comes to children. Mine are adorable, brilliant and naughty on occasion. My friends’ kids are cute, smart and have their moments. Strangers’ children are loud, unruly and often need to learn manners. It’s all a matter of perspective. Though environment also weighs heavily on just how much cute a kid is capable of being. All parents have a built-in bias. Most non-parents have a built-in bias as well, however theirs is usually in direct opposition to mine. There are “kid people” in the world that ma... Full story

  • NFL agreement not victory for free markets

Freedom New Mexico As football fans, we’re pleased to see the National Football League’s players and owners reach a new labor agreement that saves the 2011 season. But, as defenders of free-market principles, we admit that the NFL labor agreement has us puzzled. That’s because this labor dispute doesn’t fit neatly into the traditional battle lines between businesses and labor unions. In April, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who represented league owners, attacked the players’ proposals in a Wall Street Journal opinion p...

  • Libertarians embrace all values

Liberty is primarily a libertarian concept. In fact, you could say it is THE libertarian concept. But it is a concept often borrowed and used by others. Just as you are not a chess player if you make up your own rules for playing the game, regardless of whether or not you use the proper board and pieces, you are not a libertarian unless you advocate maximum liberty and minimum government. For the vast majority of libertarians that means living by the Zero Aggression Principle as well as you can, and accepting that you have... Full story

  • Home security system hard to beat

I unlocked the door, and the second I opened it the blast began. It sounded like ten banshees fighting off a dozen gorillas. Holding my ears, I ran to the contraption on the wall by the front door and pushed the numbers (which, thankfully, I remembered) and was immediately greeted by a wonderful silence. This had happened before, so I knew the house phone would ring in about a minute. Sure enough it did. They wanted to know the password. I couldn’t think of it. “It’s some kind of a fish,” I said. The lady said that wasn’t... Full story

  • New Teen Court coordinator named

The new Teen Court coordinator says the juvenile alternative sentencing program teaches civics and gives teenagers a second chance. The Portales City Council approved Mary Poynor to replace Barbara George as the coordinator earlier this month. In the Teen Court program, middle- and high-school students volunteer to serve as attorneys and jury members in a courtroom that sentences first-time juvenile offenders. Poynor said sentences include such things as community service and letters of apology. Adult volunteers facilitate... Full story

  • My turn: 'Enchantment' still in area

The battle of the sexes improv show I was in last weekend turned out to be even more fun than I thought it would be. The girls lost, but not by much. I have to say with all of the “women belong at the kitchen sink” jokes coming our way, I think we held our own pretty well. Thursday morning, I checked out the Van of Enchantment, the mobile museum which visited Portales. It definitely had an enchanting feel to it with all of the 1950s Route 66 memorabilia inside. The van will be at the Blackwater Draw Archeological Site Saturda...

  • Human judgment falls short of God's perspective

    Judy Brandon

I had an unusual experience several years ago. Some college teacher friends and I were attending a school conference in Boston. We were leaving Chatham on a Sunday morning and we saw a woman on the road hitchhiking. My first thought was to pass her and then I thought she might be in trouble. So since I was driving, I stopped to pick her up before I thought it through. She started running toward our van. She jumped in and things changed from a quiet and calm conversation among...

  • Much to be learned from animals

I am always amazed at the many blessings and gifts God has bestowed upon mankind. I am also fascinated with Adam’s intelligence in being able to name every animal. “And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: And whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.” (Genesis 2:19 KJV) With three lively sons, we had our share of pets. Guess who fed them? I did. Yet I became attached to all the pets... Full story

  • Don't let your kids become obese: Nutrition program aims to educate parents on healthy foods

Lynn La In a classroom located in a part of town where a stem of broccoli sells for $2.49 and a pizza costs only three bucks more, parents are trying their best. They want to feed their kids healthier, home-cooked meals but have difficulty finding the time, money or resources to do so. At Kaiser Permanente's Rancho Cordova, Calif., medical offices, Dr. Catherine Vigran, a pediatrician, and Carrie Beale, a nurse practitioner, are hoping to change that. "If you just fed your kids, and an hour later your son comes up to you and... Full story
