    Gabriel Monte CNJ staff writer

Police arrested a Clovis man Thursday morning who they believe may be responsible for close to a dozen vehicle burglaries in the last two weeks. It was the second time this week Fabian Martinez, 18, has been arrested for breaking into a vehicle. Clovis police detective Sgt. Lyndell Stansell said Martinez was arrested Thursday in connection with a vehicle burglary at Lowe's Home Improvement store Wednesday evening. He said Martinez is in jail and his bond has been revoked. Stansell said a Lowe's employee caught Martinez in her... Full story

  • Farmers describe recent rainfall as adequate, but still not enough

    Alisa Boswell

Clovis received close to an inch of rain Wednesday night with Portales receiving half that during a rain and lightning storm that postponed July 4th fireworks displays in both towns. The firework shows have been rescheduled for the weekend. Local farmers said the downpour will definitely benefit crops but not enough to make a real difference. "So far, it's nothing to write home about," said Roosevelt County farmer Rick Ledbetter. "It really doesn't hurt but it really doesn't help a lot either. It's just gotta be more volume...

Christina Calloway: Portales News-Tribune Andrew Moyer, left, and Lane Draper with Mark Carpenter Plumbing dig a plumbing line Wednesday for the staff bathroom on the clinic side of RGH's expansion. • Walk This Way (July 5)

    Robert Arrowsmith CMI staff

For the amount of rain we received last night, I would not have bet it would have been localized. But I am hearing people outside of town did not get any rain last night. I, however, did receive rain where I live: 2 1/2 hours of pouring rain, the longest rain storm since I moved here. Even though the city fireworks show was canceled Wednesday night, I would be willing to bet a very high percentage of people would be alright with the fact it was canceled for the reason that it...

Robin Fornoff CMI content managing editor

  • Don't dump your canines

    Tony Gennaro CMI columnist

Several years ago, David Cunico and I were surveying birds in an isolated, arid area. Tony Gennaro: Courtesy photo David was about 20 yards on my right. He broke our silence when he yelled, "Come here. Look at this." I moved in his direction quickly with both camera and binoculars ready. David was pointing at a scene quite shocking to both of us — a female canine, panting and motionless, with three rather chubby pups enjoying their breakfast. I snapped a picture. Then David and I looked at each other thinking — now what? We w... Full story

  • My turn: Looking forward to fireworks

    Alisa Boswell

Roswell was interesting last weekend, as it always is. Along with taking pictures with alien statues and one live alien (or a person in a costume), my friends and I took many other silly pictures while dancing and goofing off in our hotel room. As silly as we acted all weekend, I'm sure many people around us thought we were teenagers trapped in adult bodies. There was mall and Target shopping for clothes, which was a fun treat and a trip to the Roswell Cattle Baron, which is supposed to be the main one. Don't tell on me,...

  • Residents in auto industry share first cars

    Christina Gonzales CNJ staff writer

Work and save, that's usually how it goes when you set out to buy your first car. It may not be much, but it was yours. You may not want to admit that it was an ugly green Pinto, but truth be told that's what it was. We ask several residents involved in the auto industry about their first vehicle. • Perry Furgason, 52, owner of Integrity Auto Sales My first car was a 1964 Volkswagen. My father bought it for me and my sister to share, but I admit, I did dominate it. We used it mostly to get to and from school. It was cheap, i...

  • amos the churchmouse: the saga of joe cricket

    Gary Mitchell Religion columnist

amos the churchmouse: a view from under the pew Editor's note: Amos, our little churchmouse poet, has been reflecting on Independence Day and its relation to spiritual life. He ran across two Scriptures - Joshua 24:15, which states: "... choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve .... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord" and Galatians 5:1, which states: "For freedom Christ has made us free; Stand fast, therefore, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."Using those two passages as a... Full story

  • Religion column: No point in patriotism without emotion

    Judy Brandon

What is patriotism? Patriotism consists of dedicated love and support, and protection of one's country. Think about this question: If we eliminate the emotional part of patriotism, what do we have? I am one of those sensitive people that gets teary eyed when some band plays The Star Spangled Banner. I even became visibly moved in the church service last week when the congregation sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee." Is something wrong with me? Some summers ago, I saw the World War... Full story

  • Make the best of your days

    Joan Clayton CMI columnist

Life has a way of being "daily." We sometimes slide into complacency, taking life for granted. We are not guaranteed our number of years, but we can agree with Job 7:6 that our "days are swifter than a waver's shuttle." It is so important to come to the end of our life with no regrets … to leave good memories to those around us. It would be sad indeed to not even be missed like the wicked kings in the Old Testament. So what would you do on your last days? Would you be critical? Disagreeable" Fault-finding? Negative? Selfish?...

  • Their view: Love for my country makes me emotional

    Judy Brandon

Clovis resident Judy Brandon writes a weekly religion column for our sister newspaper, the Clovis News Journal. Here's a snippet from her latest effort. What is patriotism? I am one of those sensitive people that gets teary eyed when some band plays "The Star Spangled Banner." I even became visibly...

  • Government threat to life, liberty

    Kent McManigal CMI columnist

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We have all heard those words, and most of us probably recognize them from the Declaration of Independence, but have you ever stopped to think about what they mean? Those three things may seem random and unconnected, but they are as interconnected as links in a chain. Each is entirely dependent upon the one preceding it, and leads, or should lead, to the one that comes after it. Happiness is dependent on the liberty to pursue it, which you can't do if you are not alive. Originally...

  • Editorial: Atom bomb's history should be preserved

    Chattanooga Tenn Times

Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the U.S. House and in the U.S. Senate to create the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. Approval would establish a park with sites in Tennessee, New Mexico and Washington state to preserve, interpret and make accessible the buildings, locations and artifacts related to the building of the atomic bomb. That is a topic of national and international importance. Congress should approve the legislation, though knotty issues will be have to be resolved before the park can...
