Clovis resident David Dawson has lived in Clovis for 38 years. He spends his time doing many things including being a singer, songwriter, producer, motivator and pastor. • Leave fireworks to professionals

I probably haven’t bought so much as a firecracker since I was 15. So it was a little unsettling at first to order more than $10,000 worth of fireworks in my new job as Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce executive director. I love big public fireworks displays. I just never saw the sense in risking my fingers for something less than the ultimate set off in the backyard. This year, after so many bad fires, I don’t see the sense in risking someone’s property or life for the sake of a private display. With more than $10,0...

  • Their view: Firefighters invaluable resource

    Thomas Garcia

Last Sunday was an awfully strange day. It started for me at 10 a.m. with the phone waking me up. My editor called and asked me if I had electricity. With my eyes still hazy and without my wits about me, I replied, “Um ... I don’t know.” Turns out I didn’t. I threw on my boots and jeans and drove to the office to grab my camera, hoping to get to the source of the outage. I was headed to Forrest to take pictures. Or was I? I pulled into the Circle K on the south side of Tucumcari to get some gas. Alas, gas stations are pow... Full story

  • Unemployment rates drop in Curry, Roosevelt counties

    Sharna Johnson

Monthly unemployment numbers in Curry and Roosevelt counties dipped to rates that haven’t been seen in two years and officials are crediting expanding industries as the reason. Those figures are a sharp contrast to January, when unemployment was 1.6 percent higher in Curry and 2.1 perce...

  • Cow escapes to reach golf course glory

It’s 6 1/2 hours from Sierraville to Modesto and the packing house. Karl had put together a load of cull cows. Whilst unloading, a bony gummer mama cow who looked like a ragged shag carpet hangin’ over a sawhorse, balked, backed up, and fell between the chute and the truck! Karl leaped after the critter shouting profanities! Ever Ready, as we’ll call the cow, turned, charged and put him under the trailer. Evaluating his predicament, Karl dialed the nearby sale barn requesting assistance and to bring a rifle. Ever Ready wheele...

Samplings of recent calls to Portales law enforcement, according to police records: June 19 • About 9:45 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 100 block of North Globe Avenue in reference to a delayed burglary report. Argen Duncan

Due to extremely dry conditions in our area, we are asking everyone in Portales to be extra careful this Fourth of July by acting responsible and increasing your awareness while using fireworks. The State of New Mexico has imposed fireworks restrictions which prohibit all fireworks in all non-municipal wild land areas within the county. Aerial fireworks are also prohibited in the city, except those that produce a shower of sparks. Here are a few tips on having a safe and fun July 4th: • Observe all fireworks laws....

  • My turn: Search on for running mate

Recently, I spent several days camping with friends in south Texas’ Davey Crockett National Forest. I expected a Thoreau- or Darwin-like experience — perhaps inspiring me to write Whitman-ish poetry about gentile breezes brushing dancing sunlight on the peek-a-boo canopy of nature’s humid canvas. Maybe a missing link would waddle by — requiring new holy and scientific books to clash over evolution and creationism. Surely, I’d at least see a giant armadillo (no biggie since I can outrun my Texas friends). Soon,...

  • Dairyfest draws crowd

    Liliana Castillo

United Dairy Women’s Dairyfest attracted thousands of people Saturday after taking a year off in 2010. Michelle Heavyside, founder and director of United Dairy Women, said the group wasn’t able to book a date for the event last year at the Curry County Events Center. “Right now, we need to book a date for Dairyfest for next year. That’s how much business the events center is getting,” she said. Heavyside said the venue is perfect because it’s indoors, air conditioned and large enough to hold the people who attended. T...

Tres Amigas is pushing paperwork at the moment. The company is hoping to push materials by August, and push power across the nation two to three years later. Clovis Industrial Development Corporation Executive Director Chase Gentry figures it will be mid-2012 before any significant economic impact comes from the project, which will connect the nation’s three power grids in 22.5 square miles east of Clovis. But David Stidham, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Tres Amigas, is hoping the project is s...

  • Middle East wars can’t end soon enough

    Freedom Newspapers

It’s a start. President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that he would withdraw 10,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2011. He promised, “(We) will bring home a total of 33,000 troops by next summer, fully recovering the surge” of troop levels he began in 2009. About 67,000 troops then would remain in Afghanistan. The reason was that the surge accomplished its mission “to refocus on al-Qaida, to reverse the Taliban’s momentum, and train Afghan security forces to defend their own country.” He promised even more t...

  • Weekly update — June 26

    Kevin Wilson

Absentee ballots available for Aug. 2 election Tuesday is the first day voters can request an absentee ballot for the Aug. 2 city election on the affordable housing plan. It was approved by the city commission May 5 in a 6-1 vote, but forced into a referendum election through petitions filed by the High Plains Patriots citizen group. If approved, the plan would amend the city’s adherence to the state’s anti-donation clause to allow for affordable housing projects. The clause does not allow a municipality to directly or ind... Full story

  • Six-word summaries say a lot

Six-worders arrived on the scene a few years back. The six-worder brevity grasps a life story or current condition or philosophy. Column readers were invited to offer their own, did so with creativity, and the invitation is repeated. Here is a current crop of mine: She is a Tea Party heroine, a former Minnesota lawmaker and current congresswoman, has a Christian counseling practice with her husband, is seeking the GOP nomination for the presidency of these United States. She is Michele Bachmann: Just like Sarah Palin, only... Full story
