  • Good shows should tell stories

Ever seen “Whale Wars”? No? Normally, as regular readers of this column know, I have very low tolerance for reality TV, but there have been a few recent and notable exceptions, of which “Whale Wars” is one. That and a few of the others are the subject of this column. First comes the disclaimer; I do not pretend to be a TV critic, any more than I pretend to be a music or movie critic. In any of these areas, I simply claim to know what I like, and to be smart enough to analyze why I like it. Perhaps this show is reality... Full story

  • Marriage has been good to me

The year was 1982. June was starting out hot like most Junes in eastern New Mexico. The spring I turned 23 is the one I’ll never forget. My wife and I celebrated 28 years of marriage this weekend. We’ve both remarked over the last few years that it sometimes seems like it was just yesterday when we were married but at the same time we feel so comfortable around each other that it seems like we’ve been together forever. In fact, with this anniversary, we’ve now been together longer than either of us was single. The fact th... Full story

  • My turn: Kid overwhelmed by legend

Fort Sumner hosted Old Fort Days this weekend, an annual opportunity to remember Billy the Kid. Most of what we “remember” about the Kid from movies and history books is probably not true, of course; the facts about his life have long been overwhelmed by the legend. Or maybe Garrett helped him fake his death on July 14, 1881, in Fort Sumner? T... Full story

  • Letter to the editor: Seidenwurm dedicated to students

In my 25 years as an administrator at four community colleges, I have had the opportunity to work with about 40 superintendents of schools at 27 different school districts. While I found most of those superintendents easy to work with, I have never worked with a superintendent more supportive of the local community college than Rhonda Seidenwurm. During my four years as president of Clovis Community College, I have had the opportunity to work with her on several projects, and she has always been extremely cooperative and...

  • Tea partiers making gains in elections

Freedom New Mexico The “Super Tuesday” primary elections further substantiated the influence of the tea party movement and the conservative wing of the Republican Party as well as providing what could be the beginning of a national referendum on the influence of unions. Two-term Arkansas Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln fought off a tough primary challenge from Lt. Gov. Bill Halter, who challenged Lincoln from the left, backed by labor unions and other progressives, such as the online force MoveOn.org. They poured in millions... Full story
