  • Like to keep an eye on my feathered friends

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Jun 5, 2021

I think I may have become a bit of a birdbrain. I base that conclusion on an examination of the cash register receipt after purchasing wild birdseed recently. I’ve always liked watching birds but I don’t know how this happened. Granted, in my younger years I often watched them as a part of stalking them, first with a BB gun and later with a shotgun. While growing up, most of what I saw in the elm trees around our house or my grandparents’ seemed to be sparrows. Most proba...

  • Lady Rams making progress in district play

the Staff of The News|Updated Jun 5, 2021

ROSWELL - The Portales High softball team is making progress. Since the start of District 4-4A play, the senior-less Lady Rams have been competitive in one game of doubleheaders, but not so much in the other. That trend continued on Thursday when PHS lost to Roswell Goddard 8-7 in nine innings in the opener, then 11-1 in Game 2, the latter halted in the bottom of the sixth inning on the 10-run rule. The contests, originally scheduled for Portales, were moved to Roswell due to...

  • Tigers outlast Coyotes in eight

the Staff of The News|Updated Jun 5, 2021

DORA — Elida appeared to be cruising to a win over District 2-1A and Roosevelt County rival Dora on Thursday, leading 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Coyotes, though, had other ideas. With the bases loaded and two out, Gavin Martin’s infield bloop fell in for an RBI single, and the tying runs scored on the play when the Tigers committed a pair of errors. No worries, though. Gunner Martin singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, and the Tigers (2-3, 1-0 district) added two more runs on passed bal...

  • Injuries taking toll on Cats

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Jun 5, 2021

CLOVIS - Injuries are something Clovis High's baseball team simply can't afford this season. Seniors Donovan Usery and Norbert Archibeque missed Friday's District 4-5A twin bill against Hobbs at Bell Park, and senior infielder Quincie Molina was injured during the first game. The team's relative lack of overall varsity experience showed and the Eagles cruised to a 7-0, 22-2 sweep, the second game ending in five innings on the 10-run rule. Clovis (4-8, 0-4 district) hung...

the Staff of The News|Updated Jun 5, 2021

ROSWELL — The Portales Lady Rams will be represented in the Class 1-4A state individual tennis tournament next week. And they’re crossing their fingers about a possible team berth. Seniors Laura Blaeser and Taryn Wood lived up to their No. 1 seed status in Friday’s District 4/1-4A tournament, posting a 6-0, 6-4 win over Lovington’s Perla Gonzales and Kimberly Villasenor in the finals. Earlier, they defeated Ava Jameson and Maycie Henington of Roswell Goddard 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, then blanked Artesia’s Elenja Harvey an...
