  • Government involvement not helping

    Kent McManigal|Updated Apr 11, 2018

It’s a wonderful thing when someone decides to help the community. I might even join them if their efforts align with my values. I’m somewhat less thrilled when someone mistakes running for office, getting a government job, or passing a law for helping. A government position or job is nothing to be proud of. It’s not honorable or praiseworthy. Everything is better without the threat of law or punishment, and when funded voluntarily. Worthwhile ideas don’t require arm twistin...

  • Reporter's notebook: Fighting the good fight

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Apr 11, 2018

New Mexico is making strides in the fight against prescription painkiller deaths, according to the National Safety Council. In a recent report, the organization said New Mexico — along with 13 other states and Washington, D.C. — received its highest mark of “improving” in strengthening laws to reduce overdose deaths, according to a press release by the New Mexico Department of Health. Furthermore, New Mexico was one of only two states to implement six actions to address the opioid epidemic, which include mandating prescri...

  • Prep golf: Clovis boys pull away for win in Ruidoso

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 11, 2018

RUIDOSO — Heading into Tuesday's final round of the Leroy Gooch Tournament with a 16-stroke lead, Clovis High's boys golf team needed only to hold steady to crown itself tournament champ. The Wildcats did a bit more than that. They not only won the Gooch title by shooting a second-day 326 for a 640 total, they also increased their lead over second-place Lovington to 26 strokes. In doing so, they captured what Clovis coach Dale Fullerton thinks is the program's first Gooch c...

  • Big innings gives Dora first district softball win

    Eric Murray|Updated Apr 11, 2018

DORA — A wild 10-run fourth inning helped Dora earn its first district softball win of the year, after it defeated Tucumcari 17-8 on Tuesday afternoon. The Coyotes scored all 10 of those fourth-inning runs with two outs, as 17 Dora hitters stepped to the plate in the inning in the District 5/6A contest in Class 1A-3A. "The girls came out ready to hit," Coyotes coach Benney Tapia said. "They started off a two-out rally and ended up with a bunch of runs. That's what we n... Full story

  • Theater, criminal justice join forces at ENMU

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Apr 11, 2018

PORTALES — Theater and law enforcement: While those two sound like a match akin to cops and robbers, they're being used together to educate tomorrow's law enforcement professionals. Don Raley, a criminal justice instructor at Eastern New Mexico University, explained that he was in need of an interactive piece for a class he's teaching this semester called "Advanced Criminal Investigations." He wanted to be able to simulate a homicide investigation, and figured there would b... Full story

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 10, 2018

CLOVIS — As Facebook’s founder and CEO testified Tuesday before Congress, residents of eastern New Mexico sounded off with their opinions on the social media giant’s recently publicized failure to protect the personal information of its users. At the start of the two-day joint hearing before the Senate’s commerce and judiciary committees, Mark Zuckerberg “apologized for his company’s involvement in facilitating fake news and Russian interference in the elections,” wire services reported. U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-NM, was amo... Full story

  • Texico beats Carlsbad at Coyote Classic

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 10, 2018

ROSWELL — By coach Kristen Scanlan’s own admission, Texico didn’t have a lot of competition in Tuesday’s Coyote Classic at Roswell’s par-72 Spring River Golf Club, in large part because many of the region’s teams were competing at the Leroy Gooch Tournament in Ruidoso. Aside from Texico, Carlsbad was the only other school to field an entire team at the Coyote Classic. Still, it was impressive for the Lady Wolverines to outduel the Class 6A Cavegirls 401-446, while improving their own games at the same time. “Our girls did wel...

  • New CYFD tool good step for saving children

The Children, Youth and Families Department has unveiled a tool that will save lives, literally. It’s called the Law Enforcement Portal, a database that officers can access from their computers or mobile devices. It lets law enforcement access CYFD records, including previous referrals and contacts with children and families, whether any of those referrals were substantiated, and the names and phone numbers of case workers. The goal is giving police officers quick access to background information that allows them to q...
