  • 'Little Shop of Horrors' wins by unanimous vote

    Alisa Boswell

Correspondent A story about a man-eating plant was not the first choice for the latest Portales High School musical production, according to senior Amy Carter. But when the subject arose, the vote was unanimous, Carter said. When debating over what musical to perform, other production titles came up, such as “Little Foxes,” before the conversation turned to the famous story of “Little Shop of Horrors.” With the 15-student cast members revving up for their first performance tonight at the high school, the Portales News-Tribune...

  • Relationship with God grows, changes, as it should

Patti Dobson link Patti Dobson Religion columnist I overhead an interesting conversation during my morning coffee run. The gist of it — that Justin Bieber is a hero because he gave a court official “what for” during a recent deposition. Not my definition of hero. Frankly, I take umbrage with anyone who engages in disrespectful, entitled, and mean-spirited behavior. I have a different definition of hero. My dad, Tom Dobson, is my hero. He is an Air Force veteran, and serve...

  • Best lines came from snobbiest character

    Alisa Boswell

link Alisa Boswell Columnist After finding a VHS player last week, I got to fulfill my longing to watch “My Fair Lady,” the Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison musical rendition of George Bernard Shaw's play, “Pygmalion.” Yes, I still own VHS tapes and that is one of them. Harrison was truly the perfect choice for the role of the arrogant Prof. Henry Higgins just as Hepburn was superb as his leading lady, Eliza Doolittle. As terrible as he is to Eliza, some of the funnies...

  • Immigration control breaks law

Local columnist Government at every level throughout America needs to obey the U.S. Constitution — the highest law of the land — to the letter. All federal, state and local governments need to tightly control and regulate who is allowed to enter our country, and make sure those allowed in are complying with all the immigration laws the Constitution establishes in order to make sure our borders are secure. Their papers must be in order, or else! But, there is at least one pro...

  • Result-oriented system better for schools

Washington, D.C., bureaucrats are arguing whether New Mexico should lose $34 million in federal special education funding because it didn’t spend as much on those students in 2011 as it did in 2009. Ditto for 2012. To be clear, this is a dollars-out-the-door equation with spending, not results, as the bottom line. The feds don’t care that a state with around 2 million people spends around $500 million in combined federal and state funds annually on special education — roughly a 20-80 split. They don’t care that New Mexico... Full story

  • Broadcast news team effort

Staff writer [email protected] KENW Executive Producer Kristen Garcia came into the newsroom Wednesday with a broadcast planned, but things started changing fast. News of bull rider Irvyng Urquijo’s death was suddenly the top story and Garcia, 22, immediately had to get her news team on the job. “I have to change our whole rundown of the show as this new story will be the lead story. It is a little crazy changing everything, but I love it. That is why I wanted to do broadcast journalism,” said Garcia, who has been worki... Full story
