  • Cleveland cruises last Wildcats

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 13, 2021

RIO RANCHO — The Cleveland Storm didn’t need long to show why, 15 months later, they’re still the defending Class 6A champion. Cleveland rolled out 370 years of offense in its season debut and converted a pair of early Clovis turnovers into touchdowns in a 45-14 win over Clovis Saturday afternoon. Jeff Davison threw three touchdowns and scored on rushes of 15 and 2 yards in a 17-0 second quarter that out things away early. After Cleveland opened up the scoring with a 2-yard toss from Davison to Tre Watson, Clovis notch...

    Dan McKay, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 13, 2021

SANTA FE — New Mexico would expand options for alcohol delivery and the sale of mixed drinks at restaurants under a sweeping package of liquor-law changes moving toward passage in the Capitol. The measure would prohibit the sale of miniatures at convenience stores and broadly reshape a host of New Mexico liquor regulations. Senators adopted the legislation, House Bill 255, on a 29-11 vote Tuesday after making a series of amendments to the proposal. The House quickly agreed to the Senate amendments, sending the measure next t...

ALBUQUERQUE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said she is “clearly concerned” about the Biden administration’s recent decision to pause new oil and gas leasing on federal lands. During a wide-ranging webinar hosted by the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Lujan Grisham said she supported President Joe Biden’s efforts to reverse “reckless” public land decisions made by the previous administration, but said the decision threatens to undercut efforts made at the state level to curb emissions. “You’re not g...

    Dan Boyd, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 13, 2021

SANTA FE — Two competing bills to legalize recreational cannabis in New Mexico moved forward last week at the Roundhouse, setting up a high-stakes showdown that will play out during the final days of this year’s 60-day legislative session. Both bills approved by a Senate committee were revised in recent days as backers worked to address trouble spots and shore up support, while several other cannabis legalization measures were withdrawn in an attempt to avoid a marijuana backlog. “The clock is ticking on the session, but I...

  • Proposals could reshape NM Legislature

    Dan McKay, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 13, 2021

SANTA FE — Two proposals working their way through the Roundhouse have the potential to reshape New Mexico’s citizen Legislature — one by establishing salaries for lawmakers, the other by reviewing the need for staffing and transparency. Both measures passed the House last week and will have to move quickly in the Senate to have a chance at final approval. The 60-day session ends at noon Saturday. Supporters say the proposals would modernize the only Legislature in the country where lawmakers don’t draw a salary. Instead...

    Alisa Boswell-Gore, Correspondent|Updated Mar 13, 2021

MULESHOE - West Texas researchers spent some time with a blob last week at the Muleshoe Wildlife Refuge. No, it wasn't scary for them. The blob is not an alien lifeform that consumes everything in its path like the movie from 1958. This blob is no harm to anyone, according to Dale Rollins, executive director for the Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation at Roby, Texas, who found the bird. "I've seen a number of blobs over the last 40 years, and that is one of the prettiest...
