  • Big government only out for itself

    Tibor Machan

The theory of the big (but good) lie goes back to a certain reading of Plato’s most famous dialogue, the Republic. There are more or less crude versions of it but the gist of the theory is that for reasons of state — to secure the chance of the ruler to rule smoothly — telling lies can be justified and may even be necessary. Indeed, the big lie could well have been the very idea of the perfect political system itself that Socrates sketched in that dialogue. Some have concluded from this that Plato (Socrates) n...

  • New Mexico survives scare from Air Force

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Darrington Hobson’s 28 points helped eighth-ranked New Mexico stave off a scare from the scrappy Air Force Falcons 75-69 Thursday in the Mountain West Conference quarterfinals. Dairese Gary added 20 points for the Lobos (29-3), who set a school record for wins in a season and extended their winning streak to 15. It wasn’t the runaway that their fans anticipated as they packed the Thomas & Mack Center, celebrating New Mexico’s first top seed in a conference tournament since 1994. The Lobos, who led by j... Full story

  • Looking back can help keep faith's roots strong

    Judy Brandon

It is planting time again. Those bushes and shrubs that have looked beleaguered during the winter are beginning to show signs of flourishing. Years ago we brought an aspen tree home from the mountains and planted it in our yard. Worried about the trees ability to withstand the transplant, we chose an area by the patio because it seemed to be cooler spot. The following days made us think the tree was going to die. It looked droopy and rather wilted. But as the days passed, the...

  • My turn: No love for liberals

When David Stevens, my esteemed fellow Astros fan and Freedom New Mexico editor, asked me to write a weekly column, I was reticent. I did not want my personal views associated with my job. More importantly, having only moved to Portales from Dallas in 1982, I know Roosevelt County liberals are not interested in the opinions of an ultra-conservative newcomer from Texas. However, my views have become more centrist. I hope that will protect me from the tie-dyed, sandal-wearing, burgundy-sipping liberals who think a good book is...

  • Let’s get excited about life

    Joan Clayton

I have discovered two ways to live: I can let life happen to me or I can happen to life. Allowing life to happen is not very exciting to me. In fact, it could be dull. The same routines and rituals do not require much enthusiasm or energy for me. A big world is out there just waiting to be found. Life can be a wondrous trip, and happening to life is the way I want to go. Since the present economic troubles, many have found ways to economize and have fun doing it. They have discovered coupons, garage sales and bargains. Some... Full story

  • Cowboys take creativity to new level

Cowboys are nothing if not ingenious. It takes that sort of out-of-the-box mentality to allow them to solve the myriad of problems that arise when you combine horse, cow and rope. In the northeastern Montana country, Jim and Norvell (aliases) were backtracking one fall after the gather. By noon they cut the fresh sign of a bull. A good cowboy can distinguish bull tracks. It’s like comparing an elephant’s foot to a crow’s foot. They spotted him out in the open and eased up on him. He was a short-tempered, hostile, terri... Full story

Commissioners gave the city consent Thursday to file a foreclosure lawsuit against 128 properties in Clovis. The properties are ones for which delinquent, unpaid sewer, garbage, weed cutting or demolition fees exist, City Attorney Dave Richards told commissioners. • Reconciliation betrays intent of founders

Freedom New Mexico As the full-court-press by his administration to pass a health insurance bill that polls show most Americans oppose or have serious reservations about, we will have more to say about the curious faux-populist tactics President Barack Obama is using as he becomes increasingly desperate. For now let us just remark that it is curious to vilify and demonize health insurance companies as bloodsucking parasites on the body politic in order to pass a bill that would require all Americans to buy their products.... Full story
