  • 'Adopt an Air Commando' program to launch

    PNT Staff

The Clovis/Curry County and the Roosevelt County chambers of commerce are teaming up with Cannon Air Force Base personnel to kick off a new program Friday — “Adopt an Air Commando.” Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce said the program is a cooperative effort between Clovis, Portales and Cannon leadership in figuring out ways to connect new personnel at Cannon to local families. “(It’s) just so they can try to have someone that can help them with basic (local) information or things to do,” Kos said. Base officials...

  • Embriodery tips featured on program

    Sheryl Borden

Information on embroidery decoupage, restoring wooden floors and planning events will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and noon Thursday. If you’ve tried machine embroidery, but have trouble with placement, then embroidery decoupage may be the answer. Patsy Shields will demonstrate this method, which gives you much more control. She represents RNK Distributing and Floriani Stabilizers, and lives in Sellersburg, Ind. Bruce Johnson will show... Full story

  • Special interests keep expanding defense budget

Freedom New Mexico One thing you can say about the defense budget presented as part of President Barack Obama’s $3.8 trillion federal budget — it’s marginally more honest than some previous budgets. In years past Defense secretaries have pretended the costs of waging active wars are separate from the “baseline” military budget and have not included those costs in annual budget figures, leaving them to supplemental appropriations. However, the figure for the projected 2011 military budget is forthrightly estimated at $70...

  • Conflicted over modern technology

At times I’m a little conflicted over technology. I love it for the most part but there are downsides. Let’s take cell phones for instance. My contract is up and I’m thinking real hard about upgrading to a new model. Music and e-mail in my phone sound like handy things but then again I’m not nearly as fond of my cell phone as some folks are. As evidence the lady at the cell phone store told me I could probably downgrade my plan since I’ve accumulated 47,000 carryover minutes. I don’t use my phone unless I need to — may...

  • Structure always needed in society

    Tibor Machan

It has been my experience that people who take politics seriously tend to want to have their idea of a good or just system of laws fully implemented. Yet these people aren’t ignorant about the poor prospects of achieving their goal. Unless a society is being ruled by some incredibly powerful individual or tight-knit group, the public policies and laws will be a reflection of a hodgepodge of ideas, principles, objectives and so forth. No such mixed system is likely to remain in place for very long because the percentage of tho... Full story

  • Future depends on Ute pipeline

The Ute Water Project began in 1964 when the Interstate Stream Commission created the Ute Reservoir at Logan to provide a future sustainable water resource for the residents of eastern New Mexico. The reservoir was created due to the depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer caused by increased usage on the eastern side of the state. The city of Clovis sits on the western edge of the Ogallala, which covers several states including parts of eastern New Mexico. Because of the foresight of the Interstate Stream Commission, the Ute...

  • Letter to the Editor: Trash receptacles an inconvenience

Who is the “brain” in City Hall who suggested removing the community-type dumpsters and replacing them with individual residence receptacles? In my book, that ranks near the top of the list of all-time blunders. What were once nice-looking neighborhood streets are now decorated with green monsters two days out of the week. Was no thought ever given to how streets would look with these things lining the sidewalks? It reminds me of the slum areas of New York City I lived in during the 1940s and ’50s. (Maybe still so today. I ha...

  • Hank Baskett accomplished on, off field

Freedom New Mexico Thousands of residents across eastern New Mexico — even some non-football fans — will pay close attention to today’s Super Bowl game. That’s because we’re hoping to see one of our own do well. Hank Baskett III will be living the childhood dream of many boys when he becomes the first Clovis native to step onto the NFL’s biggest stage. Baskett is a backup wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts and plays on their special teams. Hopefully he’ll make a key block or tackle — or even catch a t...
