  • Bingaman: Budget would invest in N.M. air bases

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman on MOnday said New Mexico Air Force Bases would receive a total of about $57 million in improvements under the Bush administration’s budget proposal for 2009. All three bases would see upgrades under the plan, which was released by the Bush administration today. “The budget proposal makes an investment in each of our Air Force bases. We must make sure our bases remain in state-of-the-art condition, so that they can meet their missions,” Bingaman said. “As we move forward in writing s...

  • Good nutrient balance quite valuable

A mass nutrient balance plan could be more effective than monitoring wells in dairy farms. All New Mexico dairies are required to have a permit from New Mexico Environment Department, which among other things, requires dairy farms to install wells to monitor groundwater nutrient quality. These monitoring wells are unpopular among dairy producers because they are expensive, need maintenance, do not yield clear information, might contribute to groundwater contamination, and might not pinpoint the actual source of...

  • Many reasons to doubt rosy Iraq assessment

Freedom New Mexico During his State of the Union message, President Bush argued that his new tactics in Iraq — sending 30,000 additional troops and having them operate actively in neighborhoods rather than return to secure bases each night — “have achieved results few of us could have imagined just one year ago.” There is more substance to this claim than in previous years, when the president maintained an optimistic posture even when it was clear things were not going well. But there are reasons to be more cautious than th...

  • Commissioners use new ordinance to enact fire ban

After discussion Tuesday threatened to revisit Roosevelt County’s fire ban ordinance, county commissioners instead put a ban in place utilizing the provisions within the ordinance adopted last year. Commissioner Gene Creighton said he had concerns that the ordinance wording still wasn’t adequate. He felt that verbage providing for local fire departments to be notified prior to a controlled burn simply placed more responsibility on local departments without addressing the problem. “The way it reads now, all they (resi...

  • Praise for Hinckley well deserved

    Freedom Newspapers

“Beloved” is a word that tends to be thrown around a lot when someone dies. In the case of Mormon church president Gordon Hinckley, the adjective seems to be accurate. The 97-year-old died Jan. 27 in his apartment at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints headquarters in Salt Lake City, having become its longest-living, most-traveled leader. He was a onetime aspiring journalist who instead took a job with the church’s publicity arm after he returned from a two-year mission to Great Britain. Hinckley maste...

  • One vote yes on domestic partners issue

New Mexico lawmakers published a questionnaire in Sunday’s newspaper asking constituents a series of questions. One asked “Do you support all the same rights for domestic partners as for husband/wife couples?” Here’s an answer, from Ardyth Elms: “Yes. After many years of caring and loving for someone, you have the rights of any married couple. The only difference between a domestic couple and a married couple is a marriage license and the money paid for blood tests and the license. If the vows made from the heart to God in pr...
