  • Panel snuffs tobacco tax hike

A bill to raise money for education by boosting state cigarette taxes by $1 a pack went up in smoke Thursday when a legislative committee voted unanimously against the idea. The House Business and Industry Committee voted to table House Bill 35, sponsored by state Rep. Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, effectively killing it for this session. Egolf said the legislation would have raised $36 million, which would have been earmarked for the public schools. He also said raising the price of cigarettes would be the best way to discourage... Full story

  • Bill would seek more scrutiny on public contracts

Records show that a contract between the State Investment Office and an international law firm has been amended six times since 2005, boosting the original $30,000 cost to $5.8 million. The deal — which among other things calls for Paul, Hastings, Janofsky and Walker LLP to create an electronic database of records subpoenaed by the FBI and Securities Exchange Commission — is drawing scrutiny this session from lawmakers who don’t like the price tag. Contracts like the one signed by the State Investment Office c...

  • Gremlin resides in my computer

A gremlin lives in my computer. I’ve named him Elmer. We get along fine for awhile, then one day he says, “You’ve been doing really well, Glenda. Too good for my liking, so I’m gonna mess you up.” And he does. His little attacks usually are sneaky, and more irksome then dangerous, like making me search an inordinate number of folders looking for a file I had just yesterday. When I finally find it, I can almost hear Elmer giggling. I think he’s the one who always asks, “Are you sure you want to ...?” when I decide to delet...

  • Yes, corporations do have rights

    Tibor Machan

It has puzzled me for some time why campaign contributions are considered a First Amendment constitutional issue. If I write a check to some candidate, I am not talking, writing an essay, carrying some poster in a parade or anything that could be construed as speech or writing, so the freedom to speak or write is moot in this context. What I am doing is making use of my own money or resources and that, of course, everyone has the right to do. Suppose now that I have started a company and others are voting stockholders in it...

  • Weather could delay deliveries

The region’s severe winter snow and ice storm could delay when your Friday morning newspaper will be delivered — by up to a day. Road conditions will dictate when our independent contractors will be able to safely deliver your Portales News-Tribune and Clovis News Journal. But Friday afternoon deliveries could occur, or Saturday if roads become impassable. However, there is a way to read your paper in full, for free. If you have Internet access, all visitors to our web pages on Friday and Saturday may view the replica e...

  • Taxpayers footing bill for vacations

Freedom New Mexico It’s bad enough when they pass laws to tell you how to live your life. It’s worse when they tax you to make it harder to live your life. But when the members of Congress run up a tab at your expense for their global, jet-setting junkets on top of it all, it’s enough to make grown voters tea-party inclined. The Orange County Register reported this week on legislation introduced in Washington to curb luggage-toting, globe-trotting members of Congress, who have the gall to run up tens of thousands of dollars e... Full story

  • Suspicious story anything but untrue

If ever there was a suspicious story, thought the insurance adjuster… Walter (an alias) loved his new truck. It was a bright red, half-ton rig. When he drove it down to the Sikeston rodeo grounds, he made a point to park it at the far end of the arena away from the general parking area. Might not even get dusty, he thought. All during the rodeo he snuck glances at his shiny new truck just visible outside the edge of the arena. When the bull riding began he was daydreaming of the “new-car-smell” and faux leather sea...

Xcel Energy power crews spent Thursday working to restore power across eastern New Mexico and west Texas . “There were a few scattered outages early on, but they were really limited,” said Portales Deputy Police Chief Lonnie Berry. “The power company has been right there on the spot to take care of it, but there hasn’t been anything that has caused us problems.” Berry said there was a plan in place to set up shelters, “So if the power does go out then we can jump on it and be ready to go.” The Memorial Building, Fir...

  • Police, emergency management personnel step in to deliver Meals on Wheels

    Argen Duncan

With icy roads and four to six inches of snow Thursday, police and emergency management personnel stepped in to deliver for Portales Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels chairwoman Fayrene Powers said she was concerned about the program’s drivers, many of whom are older adults, risking injury on the roads or snow-covered driveways and porches. She called the police department and reached Emergency Management Coordinator Keith Wattenbarger, who volunteered to make sure meals reached the approximately 16 intended recipients. “I thi...
