  • The Spouse Briefs: There is value behind true competition

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

There seems to be a push in our society to eliminate among children the role of competition. Instead of having ribbons for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place my kids usually just bring home participation ribbons. Taking home something to remember the day is wonderful, but a ribbon implies ranking. Children are much smarter then we give them credit for. An adult I know tells the story of his experience being on a T-ball team when he was six. His parents had signed him up, took him to a couple of practices and the first few games, but...

  • The Spouse Briefs: Home is where Air Force sends us

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

A few years back, while stationed in Germany, a young mother and her family moved into our neighborhood. Her husband was thrilled at the chance to learn a new job, but she was resentful of being away from her small hometown and family. There was no joy in the adventure of Europe for her. I just didn't get it. For me, and most people it was the dream assignment. There were castles to explore, new foods to eat, and beautiful greenery and rolling hills. In addition, Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, and London were a car drive away....

  • The Spouse Briefs: All-natural pest control

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

When we first moved to Clovis, my husband had the option of putting rocks or grass in our front lawn. Unlike most of our neighbors he opted for mostly grass. It took awhile but finally after months of careful work we had a beautifully-established lawn. We soon came to understand that we were not the only ones with plans for that lush green grass. Next to our newly-built house was a field of dirt riddled with holes. I hadn't paid much attention to those holes up to this point, but that would soon change. One day when returning...

  • Spouse briefs: Connect your kids with family from afar

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

Being in the military has required a lot of sacrifice for our family. We have dealt with my husband being deployed or TDY or in training for a combined total of three of that last ten years. Not to mention the number of birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and school programs he has missed. We have also had to move a total of five times to various bases. Through all of this we have had to re-establish, time after time, new schools, friends and living patterns. The constant core of our world revolves around the kids and me....

  • Love in a bottle

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

Hollywood is filled with romances. The men are always ruggedly good looking with just the right amount of suaveness and the women are always wide-eyed beauties with flawless complexions and sweet dispositions. The stories mostly take place in New York or some other amazing place with a hip vibe and stunning visuals. Both the man and the woman in the story have jobs the rest of us dream of having. All they are lacking is to recognize who is the other perfectly shaped half to match them. Then there is reality for the rest of...

  • Their view: Commissary place of community

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

Rebecca Adling, an Air Force wife, writes a weekly column in Cannon Connections, our weekly military publication. Here is her latest effort: My first memories of life took place on the coast of Florida when my father was stationed at Patrick Air Force Base. I had never heard or used the term grocery store. What I knew was that food came from the commissary. Back in those days the commissary was a different place. There were strict rules about what direction you could go down an aisle. In addition, if you needed more than one...

  • The Spouse Briefs: Lucky is all about attitude

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

While packing to take my oldest son to the hospital for brain surgery, I came across a shirt we had bought for him around St Patrick's Day. On the shirt was the phrase "Born Lucky." I looked at it for a moment and thought having a congenital abnormality in his brain which was causing it to be crushed didn't seem to qualify him. I packed it anyway because it was one of his favorite shirts and reflected the kind of attitude he had about the world. Unlike the majority of kids who feel mad at the normal limitations their bodies...

  • The Spouse Briefs: Green chiles abundant in New Mexico

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

My first experience with the Hatch green chile occurred a few years ago at an upscale Texas grocery store called Central Market. Once a year they had a festival at the store featuring these spicy and tasty chiles. Now I personally am not one for hot peppers but I do like the flavor of mild or even medium. They offered samples of different recipes from steaks smothered in green chile cream cheese sauces, to delectable chile encrusted catfish and even fried green chile chips. I was in heaven, but it only lasted so long. During...

  • The Spouse Briefs: Devoted dad left quite a legacy behind

    Rebecca Adling CMI columnist

Life doesn't always end the way we want it to. A little over a year ago the man who raised me passed away from melanoma. It was hard to accept watching someone who had always seemed invincible become a shell of who he once was. My father was a born fighter. Many of his childhood memories recall making do with little because of war rationing and poverty. His family never had much money but what they did have was ambition and hard work. Although his parents only attained a third and eighth grade education, all of their...
