The Cupcake Cafe and Sweet Boutique is located at the former Wholey Cow Deli and is scheduled to open Saturday. With business such as “The Cupcake Cafe and Sweet Boutique” and “Jo Beth’s Sugar Shack,” it’s evident a couple of entrepreneurs think Clovis’ appetite for goodies isn’t satisfied by a Halloween binge once a year. “Yeah, I’m a sugar pusher,” said Debbie Sims, owner of...

  • No plans proposed for Portales' tallest building

    Eric Butler

Freedom New Mexico: Eric Butler It’s well known the tallest building in Clovis, Hotel Clovis, was once used as sleeping quarters for many but is now unoccupied. The same is true for the tallest building in Portales. Unlike the Hotel Clovis, however, no plans have been drawn up to revive the seven-story Lincoln Hall dormitory at Eastern New Mexico University. “When we constructed San Juan Village (residence hall), it opened in the fall of 2007, we closed Lincoln Hall,” said Scott Smart, ENMU’s vice president for business affai...

  • CEO: Cost, Texas hurdles for proposed super grid

    Eric Butler

Phil Harris knows the concept of an electrical supergrid isn’t as tangible, say, as the potential opening of a retail store or restaurant. “No, you definitely wouldn’t want to wrap your hand around a power line,” Harris said. But the Tres Amigas project, of which New Mexico native Harris is the founder and CEO, has enormous potential significance for the Clovis and Portales area if he pulls it off. “It’ll be a whole new ballgame for Clovis, New Mexico, if it clears the hurdles,” said Chase Gentry, executive director for... Full story

Officials at the U.S. Census Bureau in Albuquerque are currently collecting and verifying addresses in order to mail out questionnaires in March. “The census count is very important for our com... Full story

When Cannon Air Force Base reaches full capacity in about five months, communities outside Clovis and Portales may figure into the solution of finding affordable housing for personnel. But if adequate housing can’t be found, Cannon Commander Col. • City defends flu policy

    Eric Butler

No one’s been asked to leave yet, and those in charge hope the sign will be deterrent enough, but the Portales Public Library has posted a warning for nearly a week to those with indications of having the flu. The message on the sign at the front door is simple enough: “Persons exhibiting symptoms of the flu will be asked to leave.” But if the policy isn’t administered properly, according to state American Civil Liberties Union officials, the stance — intended to protect patrons and employees alike — could l...

  • Council honors Portales volunteer

    Eric Butler

A regular meeting of the Portales City Council did take place on Tuesday, although normal business took a back seat to the recognition of one hard-working citizen. Frankye King, 86, was honored with an hour-long fete prior to the 7 p.m. start of the meeting and, during the council meeting, with a recognition ceremony and the presentation of the Excellence in Citizenship award. • State pledge credited to Portales women

    Eric Butler

I salute the flag of the State of New Mexico, the Zia symbol of perfect friendship among united cultures. Current students in New Mexico’s public school systems are likely very aware of the salute to the flag of New Mexico, having to recite it along with the pledge of allegiance when classes begin each day. Likewise, adults who grew up in the state are still in the habit of extending their right hand, palms up, and reciting the words to the salute before government meetings start. The salute was created by a group of women i...
