    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Jake Cooper won Friday's first go-round in tie down roping in the 43rd annual Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Pioneer Days Rodeo at Curry County Events Center, but he was less than satisfied. Cooper's time of 9.3 seconds was more than two seconds ahead of runnerup Cody Jordan of Hobbs, but he doesn't think it'll hold up in the final two days of the rodeo. New contestants will go at it tonight and again on Sunday. CMI photo: Tony Bullocks Kyle Broce of La Junta, Colo., received a no-score on his steer wrestling effort...

  • ENMU names Prock women's basketball coach

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Joshua Prock isn't intimidated by trying to build a women's basketball program at Eastern New Mexico University. He's already had success in what he called a similar situation at Division III Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. "(Eastern is) a similar situation to where I'm at right now," said Prock, hired as the Zias' coach on Thursday. "I think if you work hard, positive things can happen. I'm more a glass-is-half-full guy than the glass-is half-empty-guy." Prock, 35, a 1996 Clovis High graduate, was one of eight c...

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Rain hit eastern New Mexico hard Wednesday night, with Portales taking the brunt of the inclement weather with about an inch of rain, but emergency crews in both Portales and Clovis reported they responded to no calls for injuries. Mark Fettig, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, said the highest rain total reported in Roosevelt County was 1.1 inches a mile northeast of Portales. The biggest issues in Curry County were with dust and wind, Fettig said, but he noted reports of hail in Texico and...

  • Health exchange's goal to get uninsured health coverage

    Christina Calloway CMI staff writer

Roosevelt General Hospital CEO Larry Leaming says the ultimate goal of a state-run health exchange is to get uninsured people in New Mexico health coverage. But with that goal in mind, Leaming says it's not clear how the state will achieve that goal while making health care affordable. "Well if we're going to have an exchange, we should be the ones to design it," Leaming said. "I'm very much opposed to governmental bureaucracy. Even good ideas can turn into regulations." Leaming sits on the board of directors for the state's...

  • Drought impacts more than just soil

    Karl Terry CMI columnist

"This is dust storm country. It is the saddest land I've ever seen." Washington Daily News reporter and columnist Ernie Pyle wrote those words in 1936 after a trip across the drought-ravaged Midwest. They could sum up where we're at in eastern New Mexico in 2013. I knew things were not good on our land in eastern New Mexico and it hadn't been for a long time. A daytrip shocked me as to just how bad the drought has become. Even the hardy buffalo grass has dried to the point of near desiccation. As you step on a clump it...

  • Credit score can hurt in job hunt

    Christina Calloway CMI staff writer

David Hemley said if employers are using a candidate's credit score as an initial screening tool for hiring, they probably shouldn't because it's not indicative of that person's job performance. Hemley, a professor of economics at Eastern New Mexico University, is concerned that the unemployed in New Mexico may stay that way because a state senate bill that would have kept credit scores out of the hiring process was vetoed by Gov. Susana Martinez. "The thing is, I can see where that can be extremely discriminating," Hemley sa...

  • Texico's magical playoff run ends in 11-1

    Isaac Avilucea CMI correspondent

ALBUQUERQUE — All that could be heard was the "click-clack" of their spikes on the concrete as they trudged from the field, up the stairs, and funneled into the concourse at Isotopes Park, where fathers, brothers, mothers and sisters gathered for the requisite conciliatory confabulation. "Second in state," one Texico fan said, "that's something to be proud of." That statement, however true, was met with glum looks after the No. 12 seed Wolverines, clutching their red trophy, were run-ruled by second-seeded Cobre 11-1 in Frida...
