Hunter education course available

A hunter education course is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 24 and Jan. 25 in Portales.

Darren Elrod, volunteer hunter education instructor with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, said the course includes firearm safety, bow hunting, hunter responsibilities, wildlife identification and management, and field survival. Cost is $5 per student to offset volunteer expenses.

Students must register by Jan. 19.

State law requires anyone under age 18 who hunts with a firearm to complete the course, Elrod said.
