PNT Staff Writer [email protected] After only three short weeks of calm, Eastern New Mexico University faculty, staff and students will already be headed back to the grind on June 3 for the beginning of the summer semester. The summer semester consists of two four-week sessions as well as an eight-week session, but all the classes are the same as the spring and fall semesters. ENMU Vice President of Academic Affairs Jamie Laurenz said the hardest part about these classes is the pacing. “It is the same courses condensed i...

  • Saying thanks to Portales

    PNT Staff

link Derek Major PNT staff writer When I tell people I’m from New York City, the first thing I get is a weird stare. Then comes the question I’ve heard dozens of times in the eight months I’ve lived here. What are you doing in Portales, New Mexico? Now that I’m leaving, I must say the answer is the people of Portales. Coming from New York, you cannot talk to strangers and when I first got here, I didn’t talk to anyone; I just did my job and went home. However, the people of... Full story

  • NBA playoffs lack drama

    PNT Staff

link PNT staff writer Every night after work, the first thing I find channel surfing is whatever game is still on. I’ve had my choice between the NBA and NHL playoffs, and I keep choosing the NHL. I’ve been a hockey fan since I was a kid, and even played roller hockey often as a teenager in New York City. For the last three years I’ve paid less and less attention to the NBA playoffs. For starters, the NBA season is too long, evidenced by star players now taking games and s... Full story

He was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. After the verdict was read, there was a host of emotions in the courtroom. Hernandez sat down almost immediately in the...

  • New zone has challenges

    PNT Staff

link Derek Major PNT staff writer I love watching sports. Kids, preps, college or pros, it doesn’t matter. If it’s on, I’m probably watching. But after 28 years of living in the Eastern time zone, coming to Mountain hasn’t been easy. Many media outlets list sports on Eastern time, and I’ve got to remember to subtract two hours if I want to catch a game from the start. As you can imagine this took a while to get used to and there were some mistakes in between. When I lived in...

Staff writer [email protected] After more than two years and several weather delays, the U.S. 70 highway reconstruction project was mostly finished in 2014. The project held up traffic and made getting to some businesses more difficult, but after it was completed, save for the landscaping and lighting, citizens were able to see their tax dollars at work. Portales Public Works D... Full story

The elm trees are still standing as 2015 approaches, though a few have been removed by the city after they were determined unsalvageable by city officials, according to Public Works Director John DeSha. DeSha said the trees h...
