Portales nabs movie premiere

Bright lights and red carpet are in store for the Tower Twin Theater as it was announced this week Portales will be included in the national premiere of the locally filmed movie “Believe in Me.”

Two showings of the movie will be held at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. March 8.

The film features scenes shot in downtown Portales and other area locations with local residents as extras. It is the story of the triumph of an Oklahoma girls basketball team.

“My main goal is to get it out to our customers and residents that we will be having a premiere,” Michelle Goodwin, Tower Twin general manager, said.

According to the theater manager, now that the premiere has been secured for the city, work has begun to bring event plans to fruition.

Goodwin has been working with Portales City Manager Debi Lee and other officials in an effort to provide a fun night out for everyone who attends the premiere, she said.

Tentative plans include a reception between the two showings of the film on opening night. She is also working with other area businesses to provide different Hollywood-style items, such as the red carpet and floodlights, Goodwin said.

Tickets for the event will go on sale March 8 at the Tower Twin box office. Ticket prices will be $6.50 for ages 12 and up, and $4.50 for ages 3 to 11. A limit will be set on the number of tickets that can be purchased at a time in an effort to ensure everyone has a chance to see the movie, Goodwin said.

“It is going to be a first-come, first-served basis,” Goodwin said.

During the premiere, extra staff and security will be on site in an effort to ensure everyone has a good time and to keep things running smoothly, Goodwin said.

“I think it just celebrates the investment that Portales made for the movie,” Lee said. “I think it’s just a great way to promote Portales. The film was a lot of work, and it had a major effect on the community.”

The local premiere precedes the first release of the film on March 9, according to local officials.
