  • For some residents, immigration issue hits close to home

Maria Valdez of Clovis sets a table at Juanito’s Mexican Food Restaurant. Born in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, she came to the U.S. at 14 with her father and stepmother for work and to send more money back to Mexico. (Staff photo: Eric Kluth) This mild-weathered Saturday afternoon, business inside Juanito’s Mexican Food Restaurant is brimming. Customers chat over chips and salsa at tables, while others cluster in the lobby to be seated. The Clovis restaurant is a bright spot on Mabry Drive, with purple porch beams and window tri...

  • Shooting suspect remains at large

    Sharna Johnson

A 27-year-old city man remains a fugitive more than six months after a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with the shooting death of a Clovis fifth-grader. Noe Torres, 27, was indicted for first-degree murder in October along with three Clovis brothers in connection with the death of 10-year-old Carlos Perez, who was shot Sept. 15 as he was sleeping and died the next day. His older brother, Ruben Perez, who was in the room at the time of the shooting, was the...

  • Israeli elections may lead to near stability in region

    Freedom Newspapers

The results of the latest parliamentary election in Israel look like a jumbled mess, but it’s just possible they reflect an interesting consensus on the next phase of Israeli relations with the Palestinian territories. At the moment that translates into almost no relations, leading to outright separation. But that might be the closest to stability that can be achieved just now. Perhaps most significant, the Likud Party, which has governed Israel for much of the past 30 years and is headed by Benjamin Netanyahu, was reduced t...

  • 4/2 Letters to the editor

State Democratic Party looking forward The New Mexico Democratic Party is an optimistic and inclusive organization that takes its inspiration from hundreds of thousands of state Democrats, but several beliefs stand out. We believe the 55,000 new jobs created since Democrats took over the state government are a step forward. We believe Gov. Richardson’s continuing fight to save our military bases will keep our country and our communities strong. We believe tax cuts the Democrats have passed are helping families and business g...

  • For some, April Fools’ Day lasts all year

    Steve Chapman

April 1, wrote Mark Twain, “is the day upon which we are reminded of what we are on the other 364.” But cheer up. No matter how foolish you may sometimes feel, you can always take comfort in knowing that over the past year, there were other people who were even worse. Today, I try to brighten your mood by demonstrating beyond any doubt that you and I are smarter than a lot of people. Some of the more conspicuous examples of folly come from the world of government. Chicago public high schools, it emerged recently, require all...

  • Shorthanded Lady Cats take fifth in Amarillo

    CNJ staff

AMARILLO — The Clovis girls track team almost didn’t send a team to Amarillo. They ended up sending only four girls, but managed to get 56 points, good for fifth out of 16 teams on Saturday in the Amarillo Relays. Kim Perkins finished first in the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, and Lauren McDaniel took first in the 100-meter dash. Clovis girls coach Darre Ray said because his team was battling the flu and it was spring break, he didn’t plan on fielding a team in Amarillo at all. “I said, ‘Let’s take the weekend...

  • Roosevelt officials conducting roundup

    Tony Parra

Courts and local law enforcement officials are issuing a warning before they begin arresting Roosevelt County residents who have not taken care of their citations and warrants. The Roosevelt County Magistrate Court officials, with the help of local law enforcement officers, will be conducting a warrant roundup in the near future, according to Tracy Alvarez, a magistrate court clerk. Alvarez said people who believe they have a warrant issued through magistrate court for failure to pay fees or fines are encouraged to go to the...

  • Zias post second split with Wildcats

    PNT staff

ABILENE, Texas — Armando Quiroz wanted to be greedy, but in the end he was more than satisfied. His Eastern New Mexico University softball team earned a second consecutive split with Lone Star Conference South Division-leading Abilene Christian on Saturday, losing 5-1 and winning 6-2. The results keep the Zias (27-13, 8-4 South) solidly entrenched in second place in the division. “They’re a very good team, and we played them to a standstill,” Quiroz said. “We went in (to the series) thinking bigger than that. We said, ‘If...

  • Rockets roll to win over Rams

    Dave Wagner

It didn’t take long to see that it probably wasn’t going to be the Portales Rams’ day. With two outs and a runner on first in the top of the first, the Rams committed two errors on the same play to hand Roswell Goddard the game’s first run. It didn’t get any better from there. The Rockets cruised to a 10-0 win on Saturday at Ram Field in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Portales (8-5) finished with six errors, leading to four unearned runs. In addition, the Rockets took advantage of four hit batsm...

  • Boxing event draws all kinds

Blanca Zubia, 13, of Hobbs, cheers for her cousin, Israel Villegas, during his fight in the 58th Annual New Mexico State Golden Gloves boxing tournament Saturday at Roy Walker Recreation Center. (CNJ staff photo: Eric Kluth) Rosemary Jimenez, a 49-year-old Clovis resident, looked like she got lost on her way to a book club or a needle-point meeting. There she was, a big smile on her face, watching people punch each other. “This is the first time I’ve come out to this,” she said. “I used to watch boxing with my dad, when I...
