A Roosevelt County resident was arrested Wednesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in a death.
Court records show Fredy Portillo, 31, was believed to be driving a silver Chevrolet pickup that collided head-on with a gray Nissan sport utility vehicle at the intersection of State Road 267 and South Roosevelt Road V on Tuesday night.
The driver of the Nissan, identified as Rayleen Vasquez, 22, of Santa Rosa, died at the scene, records show.
Witnesses said the pickup’s driver was seen leaving the crash with a small child. New Mexico State Police found a Honduran passport with Portillo’s name on it in the pickup and ultimately traced it to Portillo.
The child’s mother took the 2-year-old boy to Roosevelt General Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Records show the boy had suffered a broken arm and bruising to his face and body. The mother told police where her husband was staying, records show.
Portillo was arrested without incident. Records show he was released Thursday from the Roosevelt County Detention Center on a personal recognizance bond.
An NMSP spokesperson said the incident is under investigation and a report “will not be available for a couple weeks.”
