Two children die in Wednesday house fire

Two children are dead in a Wednesday house fire in Clovis.

Clovis Fire, Rescue and Police personnel were called to 206 Axtell St. at about 9:35 a.m. on report of smoke coming out of the residence.

Clovis Police Department (CPD) Deputy Chief Trevor Thron said when personnel arrived on the scene an adult was standing on the roof of the house and personnel got information there were three children in a room on the second floor.

According to a news release from CPD Capt. Robbie Telles, officers reported flames coming from the bottom floor of the home. Officers attempted getting into the residence but due to the fire and heavy smoke, the officers were unable to get past the front entrance into the home.

Telles reports the blaze was extinguished within a matter of minutes but “sadly two young children lost their lives as a result of the fire.”

Thron confirmed that a one-year-old and two-year-old were deceased. A civilian was seen carrying a child wrapped in a blanket away from the scene.

Police had to hold back a woman who was fighting to get into the home as firefighters tended to the situation inside. Police did not identify the woman.

Thron said the state Fire Marshal had been called in on the incident due to the deaths and there will be an investigation.

Telles reports this incident is being investigated through the joint efforts of the Ninth Judicial Major Crimes Unit, the Clovis Police Department, and the New Mexico Fire Marshal’s Office.

Telles wrote, “We want to express our most sincere condolences to the family of these two children as the loss of innocent lives is devastating not only to the family but also to the community. We ask you to keep the family and those affected by this tragedy in your thoughts.”

CPD has yet to release the identities of the family involved or the deceased children.
