Lady Rams advance to tourney title tilt with 10-6 triumph

DEXTER – Portales High’s softball team reached the championship of Dexter’s eight-team weekend tournament.

After dispatching Clovis High 8-3 in Thursday’s quarterfinals, the Lady Rams came back with a 10-6 win over Loving in Friday’s semifinals. PHS (5-4) was slated to face Dexter (4-3), a 16-1 winner on Friday over Eunice, in Saturday’s title matchup.

Senior Abby Marquez allowed just four hits and three earned runs against the Lady Falcons, striking out 10 and working around seven walks. Meantime, sophomore Angel Ornelas and senior Cyria Aguirre delivered two-run singles as Portales jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first.

Ornelas went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Lady Rams, while senior Kenzee Rowland added a leadoff homer in the top of the seventh.

Also on Friday, CHS (3-7) bounced back from its opening-round loss with a 16-6 victory over Raton. The Lady Wildcats were slated to face Capitan (2-1), which beat Hatch Valley 16-1 on Friday, in Saturday’s fifth-place tilt.

Senior Marisa Lopez threw a five-inning complete game against the Lady Tigers (0-6), the contest shortened by the 10-run rule. She allowed six hits and struck out six while also going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Juniors Adriana Silva and Giselle Romero were also 3-for-4 for the Lady Cats. Romero had two doubles and two RBIs while also scoring twice, and Silver drove in one run, scored twice and stole a base.

Freshman Jennifer Mattorano had a run-scoring double for the Lady Tigers.

In Thursday’s matchup, the Lady Rams used a pair of four runs innings to beat CHS for the second time in three meetings this spring. Ornelas went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, sophomore Myleigh Banda was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored and sophomore Dawci Cordova finished 2-for-4 with a run scored as eight PHS players hit safely.

Marquez went the distance in the circle, allowing three unearned runs and five hits while walking three and striking out 10. Freshman Amor Soto went 2-for-3 for Clovis with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.
