ENMU tracksters set three records

CANYON, Texas – Three members of the Eastern New Mexico University track team established school records in Saturday’s outdoor season-opening WT Spring Break Open, hosted by West Texas A&M.

Senior Tamia Smith extended her school mark in women’s shot put, taking second place in the event with a throw of 43 feet, 8 ½ inches. Smith, who now has at least the top six all-time throws in shot put in program history, also finished eighth in the hammer throw at 137-10.

Freshman Mahault Lebrun of France won the women’s 400 hurdles in a time of one minute, 4.1 seconds, also a school record. The other school record came on the men’s side, where junior Timothy Frederick claimed fifth place in the 400 at 47.84 seconds.

Earlier this month, Frederick qualified in the 200 for the NCAA Division II national indoor track meet at Virginia Beach, Va., and finished 12th in a time of 21.54 seconds.

Also for the men on Saturday, Jamaican freshman Alex Williams notched second place in javelin with a throw of 198-9, also giving him an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. He currently ranks seventh in D-II this spring.

Others placing in the top eight for the men at WT were junior Devis Cheruiyot, third in the 800 in 1:57.10; freshman Noe Ybaben, fifth in shot put at 44-8, and sophomore Luis Holguin, sixth in pole vault at 12-5 ½.

For the women, freshman Ashlynn Evans claimed third in triple jump at 36-1 ¼, the fourth-best mark in program history; senior Kaylyn De La Rosa notched sixth in the 800 in 2:25.36, and freshman Kennedy Ulmer was eighth in discus at 121-11.

ENMU thinclads will be split up this weekend, with some going to the Willie Williams Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona in Tucson, and others going to Texas Tech’s Masked Rider Open in Lubbock.
