Melrose posts sweep of Floyd

FLOYD – Junior Michael Cardonita went 6-for-6 with two doubles, a triple and four runs scored on Friday as Melrose swept Floyd 17-1 and 24-5 in season-opening games for both teams.

Each game ended in five innings on the 10-run lead rule.

Cardonita went 3-for-3 in both contests. Sophomore Josiah Roybal was 3-for-3 in the opener and scored three times while sophomore Cy Draper was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored in Game 2.

Junior Benton Cain had a pair of hits in the opener for Floyd, and scored the Broncos' lone run.

In other area baseball on Friday:

Hobbs JV 13, Texico 4 – The Wolverines were competitive most of the way in the championship semifinals of Eunice's Cardinal Classic until the Eagles (4-3) plated six runs in the bottom of the sixth. The game ended at that point on the tournaments 2 ½-hour time limit.

Freshman Cole Kesner hit a two-run double in Hobbs' three-run first, while sophomore Jackson Gaston and freshman Luke Parrish added two-run singles later in the contest. For Texico (1-1), junior Kyle Gonser was 2-for-3 with a two-run single and junior Easton Cooper also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In a tournament at Dexter, Grady (1-1) dropped a 20-8 decision to Loving in the championship semifinals.

In games on Thursday:

Texico 10, El Paso Da Vinci 7 – The Wolverines advanced with a season-opening quarterfinal win, scoring three times in the sixth to open a 10-7 lead.

Senior Tristan Chavez struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings on the mound, and also delivered 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Senior Jadyn Crow went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, senior Bryson Crow went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple in the first and a double, and freshman Jesus Chavez was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Grady 4, Dexter 2 – The Bronchos opened their season with a quarterfinal win over the host Demons behind the pitching of junior Zane Rush, who went four innings and struck out six, and sophomore Deakin Ragland, who worked three hitless innings for a save. Ragland, Rush and eighth-grader Andre Garcia all went 2-for-4, with Ragland driving in three runs.

On Tuesday:

Elida 13, Texico JV 3 – At Elida, the Tigers opened their season with a run-rule win in 4 ½ innings, outhitting the Wolverines JV 10-1.

Senior Levi Victor, sophomore Hardy Fraze and senior Jose Jimenez combined on the mound effort for Elida, striking out 10 between them.

At the plate, Victor went 2-for-2 with two walks, scoring three runs and driving in two, while Fraze was 2-for-4 with a two-run triple, an RBI single and a run scored. Jimenez batted four times and scored four runs, going 0-for-0 officially with three walks and a hit-by-pitch.

The Tigers face Questa in a 2 p.m. neutral-field doubleheader on Monday at Santa Rosa.

Softball – In a tournament at Santa Rosa, Dora (1-1) advanced to Saturday's fifth-place game with a 14-4 win over McCurdy in Friday's consolation semifinals.

Junior Faith Jasso gave up four first-inning runs, then blanked the Espanola-based Lady Bobcats (0-2) the rest of the way. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three runs batted in for the Lady Coyotes, who ended the game on the 10-run rule with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, while senior Bre'Ann Rodriguez was also 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

On Thursday, the Lady Coyotes lost to Estancia 28-13 in a six-inning, run-rule quarterfinal. Junior Faith Jasso went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and six RBIs for Dora, while freshman Justice Deason finished 3-for-4 with an inside-the-park homer and a pair of runs scored.
