Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Food fundraisers on tap for February

When February offers up no fewer than four fetching food fundraisers, what’s a food fundraiser fanatic to do but fork over the facts?

The festivities kick off this Saturday when the Clovis Noonday Kiwanis Club will be flipping flapjacks for its 71st annual Pancake Day that runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Clovis High School cafeteria.

The menu includes pancakes, sage sausage, milk, juice, and coffee. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-10. Tots 3 and under can feast for free.

The CHS cafeteria is on the southwest corner of the high school campus at 1900 N. Thornton in Clovis. I’m betting you can follow the crowd to find the event.

On Feb. 9, you can fill up with tacos and play a few rounds of bingo to benefit the Dora High School Business Professionals of America team. The kids are raising money for upcoming state and national competitions, and each $25 ticket sold will help.

Tacos will be served from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the old gymnasium, and the bingo starts at 7. If you’re a die-hard bingo player, extra cards will be available for purchase.

While you can get tickets at the door, ordering in advance will help make sure there is an ample supply of tacos. Members of the Dora BPA can help you out with this, or call the school at 575-477-2211 and ask for Rachel Lopez, the high school business teacher and BPA sponsor.

Chocolate aficionados are in for a sweet treat on Feb. 12 when Eastern New Mexico University’s Departments of Art and Culinary Arts presents an event it’s dubbed “Chocolate Sunday.”

Scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the upstairs ballroom at ENMU’s Campus Union Building, this event is gathering funds for both the art and culinary arts departments with the promise of live jazz, a community art show and auction, and — the part your sweet tooth has been waiting for — “all-you-can-eat chocolate and confections.”

Tickets are $25 in advance and may be purchased online at enmu.edu/ChocolateSunday or by calling 575-562-2373. Procrastinators may still attend — tickets to chocolate paradise will be $30 at the door.

Finally, be sure to mark your late February calendar for a longstanding local tradition, the 59th annual Kiwanis chili supper.

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Portales are making it easy for you to pick up supper for your family from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 in a drive-through only event at the First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Ave. C, Portales.

I recommend getting a few extra servings — it freezes great and makes for a quick and easy supper anytime. It’s especially tasty served over … you guessed it … Fritos.

Tickets are $9 and include your choice of beef or vegan chili and a piece of cake. You can buy tickets at the door, or in advance from any local Kiwanian, or by calling 575-714-7780.

I foresee a flavorful flurry of foodie fun.
