Lady Wolverines prevail in 2 OTs; Farwell reaches finals at Caprock

TEXICO – In a low-scoring affair, Texico’s girls had a seemingly comfortable five-point cushion at halftime.

That margin, though, went away quickly. In the end, the Lady Wolverines went double overtime before subduing Capitan 33-29, outscoring the Lady Tigers 7-3 in the second extra session.

Senior Catelyn Breshears posted a season-best 13 points for Texico (5-7), while senior Tylee Whipple led Capitan (3-6) with 10 points.

Farwell advances to Caprock Classic title tilt – Through three rounds, Farwell’s girls ran roughshod through the MGM Elegante bracket of the Caprock Invitational in Lubbock.

The Lady Blue, though, figured to get a stiff test in Saturday’s title game against Class 2A No. 3 Martins Mills.

Farwell (17-3), ranked 11th in 2A by MaxPreps, opened the tournament on Thursday with easy wins over Forsan 78-35 and Quanah 43-20, then blew out Lubbock Christian 65-34 in Friday’s semifinals.

Martins Mill (13-4) also had three easy victories to advance, cruising past Dalhart 46-22 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Senior Jaelyn Smith scored a season-best 15 points in the Lady Blue’s triumph over Forsan (3-9). Junior Landri Richey added 12 points and senior Charlie May Trimble 11 for the Lady Blue, which put all 11 players in the scoring column.

For the Lady Buffs, senior Kaeli Woodall matched Smith for game honors with 15 points.

Farwell then survived a two-point second quarter against Quanah (13-5), still leading by four at halftime. The Lady Blue turned it into a rout with a 19-3 surge in the third stanza.

Sophomores Makylee Baldwin and Bella Jaime scored 11 and 10, respectively, for Farwell. The Lady Indians got 10 points from freshman Mari Meza.

In Friday’s win, Jaime funneled in 13 points while Richey added 12 and Baldwin tallied 11 for Farwell. The Lady Eagles (10-8) were paced by 10 points from senior Callie Roberts.
