Cats, Lady Cats compete at Rio Rancho

ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High’s wrestling teams participated in the Southwest Shootout at Rio Rancho H.S. over the weekend, with the boys going 2-6-1 in dual matches while the girls competed in a bracket tournament, with no team scores kept.

The Wildcats defeated Rio Rancho Cleveland 45-30 and Albuquerque High 42-34, tied Los Alamos 36-36, and lost to El Paso Eastwood 66-9, the Volcano Vista junior varsity 51-24, Rio Rancho 69-6, Manzano 37-24, Carlsbad 42-36 and El Paso Pebble Hills 60-18.

Non-forfeit individual match winners for the Cats included:

• Eastwood: Michael Tree at 172 pounds, 8-6 over Ian Garcia Navarrette, and Semaj Satchel at 215, by first-period pin over Jordan Jacobitz at 215.

• Cleveland: Fidel Madrid at 139, by first-period pin over Jackie Robinson; Rhiley Williams at 152, by second-period pin over Jacob Hicks; Tree, by first-period pin over Merrick Ellsworth, and Angel Diaz at 189, a 10-8 decision over Theodore Shaffer.

• Volcano Vista JV: Kaell Berry at 127, by first-period pin over Chris Valenzuela, and Madrid, by third-period pin over Troy Baldonado.

• Albuquerque High: Williams, by second-period pin over Alejandro Lopez, and Satchel, by first-period pin over Malik Fielder.

• Rio Rancho: Tree, by first-period pin.

• Los Alamos: Satchel, by second-period pin over Kyler Young, and Caleb King at heavyweight, by second-period pin over Elijah Alvarez.

• Manzano: King, by first-period pin over Adrian Farmer.

• Carlsbad: Berry, by first-period pin over Justin Owen; Noah Lyles at 160, by first-period pin over Zander Lopez, and King, by first-period pin over Devin Chavez.

• Pebble Hills: Satchel, by first-period pin over Adrian Flores, and King, by second-period pin over Dominic Eloreaga.

Meantime, the Lady Wildcats were in one of two seven-team pools. Jordyn Archuleta finished third at 152 pounds, going 2-1, while Zulehiny Mendoza was 1-2 at 107, and Ashley Moron at 114, Jocelyn Romero at 126, Star Apodaca at 138 and Sunday Ward at 165 were all 0-2.

The Cats and Lady Cats were scheduled for a dual meet on Tuesday night at Artesia. On Saturday, the boys travel to the Manzano Invite while the girls will take part in the Highland Kickoff Quad.
