Cats, Lady Cats open wresting slate in tourney

ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High’s wrestlers opened the 2022-23 campaign on Saturday in the 12-team Volcano Vista Westside Kickoff tournament, with the boys finishing second in their four-team pool at 2-1 and then splitting two matches in a round-robin against other second-place finishers.

Meantime, the Lady Wildcats were eighth of nine teams, scoring 14 points. Volcano Vista took team girls team honors with 192 points to 153 1/2 for runnerup West Mesa.

On the boys’ side, the Wildcats defeated Grants 54-12, lost to Volcano Vista 60-18 and turned back Manzano 39-30 in pool-play duals. They then outlasted Atrisco Heritage 36-30 in the round-robin before absorbing a 68-9 loss to the Volcano Vista junior varsity.

Top performers for the Cats were senior Michael Tree at 172 pounds and freshman Kaleb King at heavyweight, both of whom posted a 4-1 marks with two first-period pins, a second-period fall and a forfeit win. Meantime, Felix Madrid at 145 and Rhiley Williams at 152 were both 3-2, each with a pair of first-period pins and a forfeit win .

At 160, Miguel Hernandez scored a pair of first-period pins en route to a 2-3 record for the weekend.

For the girls, Yocelyn Romero earned a fourth-place finish, going 1-2. She lost in the third-place matchup by first-period fall to Atrisco Heritage’s Jocelyn Delgado.

Gleidy Cruz-Barraza also scored a win for the Lady Wildcats, going 1-2 in the heavyweight division.

The Cats and Lady Cats return to action this weekend in the Southwest Shootout, hosted by Rio Rancho H.S.
