'Heavy snow and blowing snow' possible for Thanksgiving

Concerns about a holiday blizzard increased Wednesday as the National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Curry, Quay and Roosevelt counties.

Forecasters warned of possible "heavy snow and blowing snow" beginning Thursday and continuing through Friday evening.

Late Wednesday, NWS was predicting 4 to 7 inches of snow over the next 24 hours. Dan Heerding, emergency management director for the city of Clovis, said some forecasts were warning of up to 8 inches of snow for the Clovis-Portales area.

NWS also predicted sustained winds of 30-35 mph on Thanksgiving day, with gusts up to 45 mph, and cold temperatures with a Thursday high of 42.

Friday's high is expected to be 33 with a continued chance of blowing snow. There is a 70% chance of precipitation Thursday and Friday.

Overnight lows will be in the upper 20s, according to NWS.

"Travel could be very difficult," the winter storm watch warns. "Tire traction will be reduced. Visibility may fall below one half mile at times. Extend the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. This includes portions of I-40 and U.S. Highway 60."

Snow and high winds are expected to be gone by Saturday, with high temperatures in the lower 50s and 10-15 mph winds.
