Roosevelt County to hold road planning workshop

The Roosevelt County Commission will hold a road planning workshop at 2 pm Thursday in the Commission Room at the county courthouse.

Roosevelt County Road Superintendent Rick Lovato said the purpose of the workshop will be to review the list of priorities on the county’s 5-year 2023-2028 Road Plan.

Lovato said he has “a few suggestions” and the commissioners will have their suggestions. Once the list is revised, the commissioners will vote on it at a subsequent meeting. Every year, the county revises its list.

Then they will submit the revised list with the Local Government Road Funds Project Grant application, he said. The state will decide what roads to fund.

“Not every road on the list is going to get done – sometimes they fund two miles, sometimes five miles,” he said.

“With the economy the way it is now, the state will probably (fund repairs) on fewer miles,” given the high cost of materials and construction at this time, he said.

Roosevelt County Commission Chair Shane Lee said the county “used to get a lot of money (for road maintenance), but now the state is really crimping down on where they spend money.”

Thursday afternoon’s meeting will be the second workshop of the day.

Commissioners are holding a 10 a.m. meeting in the Commission Room of the courthouse to “solicit comments for the Roosevelt County fairgrounds master plan update.”
