Muleshoe dominates early in win

TULIA, Texas — Junior running back Daniel Sianez rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns and Muleshoe dominated from the get-go in posting a 37-20 victory over Tulia on Friday night.

Junior quarterback Sebastian Kirven added 121 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries, and also completed 11-of-18 passes to five receivers for 117 yards, including a touchdown toss to senior wide receiver Eliasar Cisneros.

The Mules (3-1), who posted a 384-377 margin in total yardage, extended a 16-6 lead at the quarter to 30-6 at halftime and were never threatened.

Senior linebacker Daniel McMullen was in on 11 tackles for the Mules, including four solo stops. He was also credited with four tackles for loss.

For the Hornets (2-2), sophomore quarterback David Molina went 9-for-17 through the air for 205 yards, throwing a pair of scoring passes to sophomore wide receiver Yoda Robinson.

Muleshoe’s next outing is a 7 p.m. (CDT) kickoff on Friday at home against Abernathy.

In other area action from Friday:

Farwell 48, Texico 0 — At Texico, the Steers raced to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised behind four first-half touchdown runs from junior running back Corey Stancell, who finished with 193 yards on 11 carries.

Farwell (4-0), coming off a 49-0 spanking of Sundown at home the previous week, complied a 21-6 margin in first downs and a 457-98 advantage in total offense, including 410 yards on the ground and a 10.5-per-carry average with seven players getting rushes.

Senior quarterback Alec Actkinson, who had 118 yards rushing, threw a 9-yard scoring pass to senior wide receiver Joe Crume in the second quarter. Farwell’s second-half tallies came on runs of 2 yards by senior running back Xander Schilling and 12 yards by junior running back Joel Arevalo.

Junior Jackson Wilbourn went 6-for-7 on PAT kicks.

Farwell hosts Friona on Friday night, while the Wolverines (3-2) have an open date. Texico plays at the Carlsbad junior varsity on Sept. 29.

Olton 56, Bovina 26 — Host Olton (4-0) went up 20-0 at the quarter and cruised as senior quarterback Logan Lassiter ran for one touchdown and threw for three more.

Lassiter finished 19-of-26 for 295 yards with no interceptions, hitting senior wide receivers Joel Olivas on scoring plays of 26 and 38 yards and Jake Soliz on an 8-yarder. Junior Baldo Garcia carried 15 times for 142 yards, tallying on runs of 7, 17 and 33 yards.

For the Mustangs (1-3), senior Darian De La Rosa toted 24 times for 146 yards and a touchdown, while senior Nathan Garcia had six carries for 52 yards and a score.

Bovina plays at Shamrock on Friday night.

Lordsburg 46, Melrose 32 — The visiting Mavericks, in their first year in 8-man, broke away from a 22-20 lead after the first quarter to improve to 5-0 while handing the Buffaloes their third loss in five games.

Melrose took an 8-0 lead on the second play from scrimmage when junior Dathan Yeary ran 60 yards for a touchdowns. The Buffs then grabbed a 14-8 lead on a 30-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Josiah Roybal.

Josiah Roybal also had scoring strikes of 15 and 5 yards to twin brother Josiah Roybal. Yeary added a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter.

For the game, the Buffs had three turnovers, one after reaching the Lordsburg 5 and another at the Mavericks’ 10.

Gateway Christian 56, Elida 6 — At Roswell, senior Jace Worley ran for four TDs and threw for one the top-ranked Warriors (5-0) built a 32-0 halftime lead and handed the Tigers their first loss in a game ending with just over four minutes left on the 50-point lead rule.

Gateway scored seven touchdowns and sophomore Maddox Jennings added 2PAT kicks after each one of them.

Worley broke the ice on a 5-yard run midway through the opening stanza, then added touchdown runs of 14 and 6 yards and caught an 8-yard scoring pass from sophomore Barton Pieratt in the second frame. His final score came on a 40-yard run just over two minutes into the third canto.

Freshman Chase Aguirri put Elida (3-1) on the board, grabbing a 4-yard TD pass from junior Jeremiah Woodruff with seven minutes left in the game to make it 48-6. The Warriors then finished it out on sophomore Nathaniel Wigley’s 3-yard scoring pass to senior Hayden Wigley and Jennings’ 2PAT kick.

The Tigers travel to Mountainair for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday.

In other games on Friday night, host Carrizozo (1-3) posted a 48-18 victory over the Floyd Broncos (0-3).

In a Saturday matchup:

Dora 57, Animas 26 — In a neutral-field game played at Cloudcroft, Animas stunned the Coyotes by returning the opening kickoff for a score, but it was pretty much all Dora after that.

Senior Connor Rooney scored five touchdowns — three rushing, two on passes from senior Lane Faver — and also went 4-for-7 on 2PAT kicks for Dora (4-1). Faver also rushed for a pair of TDs, while junior Cole Kircher’s 40-yard run and Rooney’s 2PAT kick quickly tied the score 8-8 early.

Dora opened a 38-12 halftime lead over the Panthers (2-2) and stayed in control the remainder of the day.

After a bye this week, the Coyotes return to action on Sept. 30 at Grady.
