Late touchdown lifts Bovina to win

SEAGRAVES, Texas — Senior running back Darian DeLaRosa caught a 5-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Daniel Herrera with 1:09 left, then added a 2-point conversion run to lift Bovina past Seagraves 26-20 on Friday night.

It was the second touchdown of the game for DeLaRosa, who went in from 3 yards out midway through the second period to pull the Mustangs (1-1) to within 14-12.

Herrera connected with junior Miguel Lopez early in the third period to give Bovina the lead, but Jerry Simantal’s second score of the game, coming with 7:20 left, put the Eagles (1-1) back in front 20-18.

For the game, the Mustangs posted a 388-184 advantage in total yards, with Herrera going 17-of-29 for 310 yards and DeLaRosa catching eight passes for 111 yards. Herrera also scored on a 1-yard run late in the first quarter.

Bovina survived five turnovers and 135 yards in penalties, while the Eagles suffered 100 yards in walkoffs. Simantal finished with 92 yards rushing for Seagraves (1-1).

The Mustangs play at home this week, welcoming Lubbock Christian on Friday night.

In other area Texas action on Friday:

Muleshoe 41, Lamesa 14 — Trailing 8-0 well into the second quarter, the Mules stormed from behind as junior quarterback Sebastian Kirven ran for two touchdowns and threw for another.

Kirven’s 3-yard run and 2-point conversion pass to junior wide receiver Ramzee Martinez tied the score midway through the second period, and Kirven then hit senior wide receiver Irvin Torres for a 48-yard touchdown pass and a 14-8 halftime advantage.

Leading by six points, the Mules (1-1) tacked on three fourth-quarter TDs, including two on runs of 6 and 2 yards by senior running back Uriel Vasquez. Muleshoe had a 20-7 edge in first downs and posted 400 yards in total offense, with Kirven going 10-of-18 through the air for 119 yards and junior Daniel Sianez added 162 yards rushing on 20 attempts.

Muleshoe entertains rival Friona this Friday.

Farwell 7, Vega 6 — At Farwell, the Steers won a defensive battle against the Longhorns as junior Corey Stancell found sophomore Ryder McElroy on a 42-yards scoring pass in the third quarter.

Vega (1-1) got its only points on a short run in the second quarter, but missed the PAT kick.

Stancell rushed for 68 yards on 19 carries while senior quarterback Alec Actkinson added 64 yards on eight attempts for Farwell (2-0).

The Steers are at home again on Friday against Sundown.

In area New Mexico action on Friday:

Texico 43, New Mexico Military 21 — The host Wolverines (3-0) opened a 23-7 halftime lead and went on to keep the Colts (0-2) winless for the season.

Sophomore running back Alex Fuentes scored on runs of 10, 3 and 10 yards for Texico. Junior quarterback Cade Figg ran for two scores and also tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Erik Davalos.

The Wolverines play their first road game of the season on Friday, traveling to Olton.

Elida 87, Grady 37 — The visiting Tigers had two quarters of five touchdowns each and won handily in a high-scoring tilt against the Bronchos.

Elida (2-0) led just 13-7 at the quarter, but opened it up to 47-19 at halftime. The Tigers then outscored Grady 33-6 in the final stanza.

Senior Mason Pritchett notched five touchdowns, including a 32-yard interception return, while junior Seth Jimenez added scoring runs of 38, 3 and 46 yards for the Tigers. The game ended in the fourth quarter on the 50-point lead rule.

Junior Xavier Romero caught a pair of third-quarter TD tosses from junior Zane Rush for the Bronchos (1-2), who are just starting their program this fall. Rush also caught a TD pass from eighth-grader Noah Stanfield.

Grady plays at Gateway Christian on Friday, while Elida has an open date.

Dora 54, Floyd 8 — The Coyotes spoiled Floyd’s home and season opener with a dominating performance that included three touchdowns — two rushing and one on a fumble return — for senior Conner Rooney. He was also credited with a safety for Dora (2-1).

Sophomore Aaron Combs threw a pair of touchdown passes to fellow sophomore Ashton Davis, and also returned a free kick after the safety for a touchdown. Senior Kegan Rodriguez added a 2-yard scoring run for the Coyotes.

Dora hosts Carrizozo on Friday, while the Broncos are slated to meet Animas in a neutral-field game at Cloudcroft.
