Gun control march planned in Clovis

CLOVIS -- Marches for “common-sense gun control” are planned Saturday for cities across the country including Clovis.

The event is called “The March for Our Lives Clovis” according to city resident and organizer Garrett Clark.

Saturday’s march starts at noon at Greene Acres Lake, making its way south along Main Street and ending at the north end of the Clovis-Carver Public Library parking lot.

“The main march will be in D.C.,” Clark said. “The nearest marches outside Clovis will be in Albuquerque and Lubbock.”

Clark said his inspiration for organizing the event in Clovis was reading the story of what school children in Uvalde, Texas, did to survive the shooting incident there. On May 24 a gunman entered Robb Elementary School and killed 19 students and two teachers.

“I have a 3-year-old daughter and I can’t imagine her going through that,” Clark said.

Clark said there has been “polite” talk of gun control since the Sandy Hook shooting of 2012.

“Most Americans favor some kind of common-sense gun control,” Clark said. “It’s been a decade since Sandy Hook. Is it too soon still?”

Asked what is common-sense gun control, Clark said it means no firearm with an external clip should be in the hands of everyday citizens.

Clark believes a lot of fear mongering is why there are citizens who have so many weapons.

“I believe that the Second Amendment has been taken out of context,” Clark said.
